Earl Scruggs Revue - Live at Kansas State

Here's a long out of print album from the aforementioned Earl Scruggs Revue. Released in 1972, this gives a good glimpse of what Earl Scruggs was into at the time.....not your typical bluegrass. After splitting with Lester Flatt in the late 60's, he formed a new band with his sons. With a loose atmosphere, amplification, and a slew of songs from the likes of Dylan and Baez. This is a good album....a fun album. You can tell Scruggs was having a blast playing music with his family.

If anybody has the album that came out shortly before this called "Family & Friends" (also out of print) please share, I've been looking and looking for a digital copy of it.

  2. Thank you for this excellent album. I "might" have access to the Family & Friends album. It may be a few weeks, if I can get it.

The Family & Friends album was the inspiration for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's: Will The Circle Be Unbroken. Earl Scruggs was the first musician that they asked to join them. When he agreed they started asking others and the rest is history. Thought I'd throw in that bit of useful/useless info.

  3. dogl, that would be sweet if you could come through. I "may" have found it as well. Let's both keeps are ear to the rail and our fingers crossed though.

I did not know that about the "family and friends" album being the inspiration for "Circle"....I love useless knowledge like that, thanks

Anonymous, I could defininitely work up a bluegrass sampler...I will have to add it to my list of things to do :)

  4. The Earl Scruggs Revue blew me away when I saw their performance on the awesome 'Bluegrass Country Soul' dvd. Great to see your efforts to get their oop stuff up. I'm on my way out the door to get The Anniversary albums.

speaking of a bluegrass sampler, i was just thinking how i've never seen a good list of 'classic' or 'essential' bluegrass records. they can be hard to sort thru. i could recommend a few, like the excellent Doc and the Boys!

  5. wow, a list of classic bluegrass albums. now that's a hefty undertaking. Whatever's on it, the dirt band's "will the circle be unbroken" has to be on top.

oh and dogl....I got it....family and friends that is, a coworker came through for me....his brother in law had it. I also found they have a DVD of the Family and Friends....I will be buying that for certain.
