Vintage V-Roys vids

As you guys know, I'm a huge V-Roys fan from way back. Matter fact I was telling someone the other day that I bet I played "Just Add Ice" more in the 90's than any other album and it remains one of my favorite albums to this day.  So when I found these vintage V-Roys clips on youtube (posted by Scott Miller no less) I about shit a cinderblock.  Check them out, you got Mary, and the most interesting to me (because it's never made it's way to an album) is the Cold Cruel World clip.

While I don't know if the V-Roys will ever get back together (I wish they would), fans in East Tennessee can get the next best thing as Scott and Mic will be playing a one of their legendary New Years Eve shows at the Bijou Theater in Knoxville. Coincidentally, the same night Virginia Tech plays Tennessee....bring it Scott!!!

Guy Clark post shut down = Guy Clark news, & more news

• I was asked to pull down the Guy Clark post because Dual Tone is actually planning to release a proper pro mixed version of that show at some point. Can't wait for that to come out, and hopefully it will have a DVD with it!

• The other day I mentioned that Scott Miller was going to be releasing a new song on his site to help fund his new album (similar to what he did with Appalachian Refugee Demos). Well it's going to be a series of songs and the first, Lo Sienta, Spanishburg West Virginia is now available for $1.49. The Scott Miller newsletter included a great essay about this song which I can't seem to find on the site. Anyway, just know it's very much in the vein of the Appalachian Refugee Demos and it's about a real town called Spanishburg. Hey Scott, how bout next time your drive up to Athens, WV you stop off and do a show in Princeton? Even better drive 30 min. east to Pearisburg and the beer's on me! (not that we would have any place to drink other than my basement)

• This is just news I forgot to include in the other days post. The much anticipated new Gillian Welch album is not happening. What? Well we are getting a Dave Rawlings Machine album instead. Can't say what the difference will be, perhaps dave is taking more lead vocals. Anyway, that album is called A Friend of A Friend and will be out Nov. 17th. Pre-order at Amazon

• Ray Wylie Hubbard's Last Rites of Ransom Pride has found a distributor and is getting close to having a release date. Unfortunately they are tweaking the soundtrack, does this mean no killer Ray Wylie soundtrack? God I hope not!

• Wrinkle Neck Mules latest album Let The Lead Fly was pushed back to to October 20th release date. That's next Tuesday. It says in that story that it's a great album for fall driving through the mountains.....true statement, as I have come to the same conclusion.

• Scott Miller has a new track that will be available for download on his site and help fund his upcoming album. I don't have the specifics cause dammit I lost the email. In the meantime, enjoy some of the killer vids he has made on his site.

• Just wanted to give a heads up for the Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle album Let's Just Stay Here which comes out tomorrow. Carolyn is half of canadian supergroup The Corn Sisters (with Neko Case), and as you know, NQ Arbuckle made one of my favorite albums of 2008. The album also features an unexpected cameo from fellow canadian Corb Lund.

• In Drive By Trucker news, according to Patterson they have recorded material for 2 upcoming releases. Can't wait

News: Todd Snider, Scott Miller, Wrinkle Neck Mules, etc...

Well there's a lot of stuff to talk about here. First off, that Ribbonpigeon album from the last post, well they emailed me to let me know that they just changed their name to The Only Sons and are working with a label for a distribution deal with that album and the one prior. Can't wait for that.

How about some Todd Snider news? Todd's new album The Excitement Plan is now available for pre-order. Due out on June 6, the $40 dollar deluxe pre-order box set features some cool items. Like each set will be signed and numbered by Todd (limited to 500), a DVD of the Peace Queer movie, a bonus disc of songs, 3 stickers, and even a Todd Snider flag! Pretty sweet.

Now on to Scott Miller. Those of you like myself who got the Appalachian Refugee demo CD AND pre-ordered the new album back in december (or was it november?) may have noticed a glaring omission from the album.....that omission was the sublime song Appalachian Refugee. Well Scott has heeded his fans call and decided to include the song on the street version of the album (due out Next Tuesday). Now here is the cool part, since the folks who pre-ordered the album did not get this track, he made it available for download on his site. This is a highly recommended download. Also while you are there check out his new site, he finally updated it to reflect the computer age :P

Wrinkle Neck Mules....I know there are a few fans of them out there :). Well good news as they have recorded over 30 songs and are thinking of releasing possibly a double album or some kind of box set sometime this year. Read about it here.

Some odds and ends. The new Steve Earle album kicks all kinds of ass, The Steeldrivers are in the studio working on their followup, Magnolia Electric Co. have a 7" EP coming out April 18th featuring 4 unreleased songs, and Jimbo Mathus just put out a new album called Jimmy The Kid that is somehow impossible to buy but you can listen to samples on his myspace page.

My favorite song off the demo album of the same name.....this is up there with my favorite Scott Miller songs of all time.....possibly even better than Red Ball....yes, it's that fucking good!!!

Scott Miller's new album now available for limited pre-order

Butter my butt and call me excited! Scott is making his latest album (not due out officially until next march) available for pre-order on his website. This is the same album that Appalachian Refugee demos helped fund (I got mine, didja get yours?). Act fast though, the info states only 1000 pre-order copies will be available. Not only will you get the new signed and numbered CD before Christmas (least that's what the site says) he's also going to throw in a making of a making of video available on the enhanced CD!!! hot damn!!

Kinda dissapointed however that I don't see "Appalachian Refugee" on that tracklist (by far my fave track off the demos)....cool to see a Tom T. Hall cover though. Oh and also nice to see a duet with Patty Griffin on Right Here My Love

The V-Roys - Live In Austin 1998

Been diggin' on this boot for the last few days. As most of you know I'm a big fan of these guys right here, and this is an audio capture of them at the top of their game. If there are any Scott Miller fans out there that don't know, this was his band prior to going solo. They were the first band on Steve Earle's label E-Squared (whatever happened to that label?). This is good sound, good show. They play just about every song off both their albums, a Replacements cover, a V-Roys version of Scott's "I Ain't Coming Home Tonight" and one song (Can't Shake Knoxville) that has still yet to make an official album.

Scott Miller/The Gougers - Live At Stubbs BBQ Austin TX 6-7-07

Speaking of BBQ.....here's a cool show of one of my new favorites opening for one of my old favorites. That's right, The Gougers opening for Scott Miller. This is a nice boot. The Gougers set is damned good (except for the partial Manheim Station), and the Scott Miller set is on par with his latest live album (though not mastered near as well....as expected). It's nice to hear some old V-Roys songs out of Scott too. This set actually reminds me of both Reconstruction and the V-Roys live album "Are You Through Yet?" as it includes the aforementioned V-Roys songs and one of my fave covers he does, Neil Young's "Motion Pictures".

Allright, now Scott Miller is another of my favorites. Been following his career for a long, long time. I first heard him was on the Bubbapalooza CD which I had bought strictly for the SCOTS live song on it. Scott Miller was a pleasent surprise to find on that album. Then a year or so later I picked up the first V-Roys album "Just Add Ice" and instantly fell in love with it. The V-Roys were the pride of Knoxeville, TN and the first band signed to Steve Earle's record label (E-Squared). Truth be told, the only reason I picked the album up in the first place was cause I saw Steve Earle's name on the back of the case as producer. It wasn't until I started reading through the liner notes that I figured out this was the same guy from the Bubbapalooza CD.

The V-Roys still remain one of my favorite bands from that era and it's a shame they broke up, but luckily Scott persevered and has had a fruitful solo career since the V-Roys. I remember when I picked up his first solo album "Thus Always To Tyrants" and finally figured out that he was from VA....that made me like him even more. All of his solo album have been pretty good, but his shows....that's where he really shines. I'm hoping to catch him this coming august. If you can't catch him, go out and buy his newest album (which is a live album) "Reconstruction"

Bubbapalooza Vol. 1: Chronicle of The Redneck Underground

Here's an old out of print album for you, and a rare one at that. Bubbapalooza was an annual concert held in Atlanta, GA and was organized by Gregory Dean Smalley. Now you may be wondering who Gregory Dean Smalley is, and some of you big DBT fans may even know. I'll get to who he is in a minute, but first more about this album. Now back in the early to mid 90's there was a scene around the Atlanta and Athens areas of Georgia that was dubbed (by Deacon Lunchbox) the "Redneck Underground". See this was back before anyone knew what to call this type of music, so there were all kinds of names floating around....."no depression", "insurgent country", "redneck underground", "cow punk", etc... Anyway, the Redneck Underground specifically included bands from Athens, Atlanta, and Chapel Hill, NC (which had it's own killer scene back then). So in 1995 Gregory Dean Smalley decided they needed a festival.....and what better name than Bubbapalooza.....a play on the then new and still credible Lollapalooza. This is the recording of that first festival.
Now you'll see a couple familiar names here.....mostly Scott Miller (pre V-Roys) and Southern Culture On The Skids. But there are others here like Kelly Hogan who was in Deacon Lunchbox's band. Oh, and Gregory Dean Smalley....who I promised I would get to. I'm sure alot of you have heard of him, he is the subject of DBT's song "The Living Bubba" and this album is one of his few recorded moments with his band "The Diggers". Standout tracks are "Loweena", "Mama Was A Dancer At The Clermont Lounge", Scott Miller's sublime "Napoleon", "George Jones (Has Never Sung About My Girl" and of course the highlight of the whole album.....The Diggers' "She's Breakin' My Heart (While I'm Drinkin' Her Beer)"

I'm getting pumped up for his new live album that comes out in a couple weeks so I've been listening to alot of his shows over at Archive.org and here is one of my favorites. Sound Quality on this one is excellent. The V-Roys - Are You Through Yet?

This was the V-Roy's farewell album, the aptly titled "Are You Through Yet?".
Now I am a huge Scott Miller fan and this album does not disappoint. Some of my favorite tracks off this one are the superb covers: Neil Young's "Motion Pictures", The Replacements' "IOU", The La's "There She Goes", and Louden Wainwright's "Out of this World". This album is also a great overview of The V-Roys, one of my favorite bands.
