A Truer Sampler 08 - Whiskeytown

As promised a while back, alt country's darling Ryan Adams' first (and best) band, Whiskeytown. Whiskeytown was centered around Ryan Adams and Caitlin Cary and the sweet harmonies they made have yet to be recreated. Based out of the Chapel Hill, NC area in the mid 90's, they quickly rose to the top of the crowded scene that was happening there (it was a killer scene back then too) picking up where Uncle Tupelo left off. I think ol' Ryan summed it up best with the lyric "So I started this damned country band, cause punk rock is too hard to sing".
Whiskeytown split up after only 3 official albums with Ryan Adams going on to pursue his solo career and Caitlin doing the same (though not as high profile). What they left us with though remains essential alt country and this is a good overview of this seminal band.

Billy Joe Shaver - Seste Calende, Italy July 25th 1997

Here is a damned fine show from Billy Joe Shaver. Recorded in Italy in 1997 almost 10 years ago to the day. Features his late son and guitar virtouso Eddie Shaver, and man does he shine. I've always been a big fan of both Billy Joe's songwriting and Eddie's "Don Rich meets Stevie Ray" guitar style. If your not a BJS fan and you like rockin' country, download this.....cause he is the master......Billy Joe Shaver is a living legend....he IS outlaw country. Without him there would never have been such a thing. Anyway, I could go on for days about how much love and respect I have for this man....just download this show and maybe you will too.

Sorry about the lack of posts this week, been busy. This is just a mix I've been listening to in my truck and I thought it was pretty good so I decided to make it the first "Truesounds" post. Which I will probably post occasionally. This is mostly newer stuff with a little older stuff in there for good measure. Here is the playlist:
  1. Meltdown - Slobberbone (most members of slobberbone now in The Drams....though they are not as good)
  2. Naked Ground - The Dexateens (this is off their new album, produced by Patterson Hood)
  3. Atlanta - Centro-Matic (off their new E.P. Operation Motorcide)
  4. Try - Jason Isbell (off his new one, ex-Drive By Trucker)
  5. Moonlight Only Knows - Deadstring Brothers (off there killer 2005 album)
  6. Anywhere But Here - Bruce Robison (off his new E.P., Kelly Willis's husband)
  7. No Angel Knows - Slaid Cleaves (off his 1997 album of the same name)
  8. Killin' Time In Texas - Gurf Morlix (off his new album, texas super-producer)
  9. Something Changed - Chris Knight (off his new-old album The Trailer Tapes)
  10. Train To Jackson - Jeffrey Foucault (off his newest album Ghost Repeater)
  11. Lowlands - Gillian Welch (off her last album Soul Journey)
  12. Rivertown - Hayes Carll (off his 2005 masterpiece of an album Little Rock)
  13. Red Buds - William Elliot Whitmore (off his album from last year)
  14. Restless - James McMurtry (off his last album Childish Things)
  15. Death's Black Train - Gob Iron (Jay Farrar side project from last year)
  16. Mellow Down Easy - Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch & Fats Kaplan (off there album from last year)
  17. Voice of The Devil - David Childers and the Modern Don Juans (rockin' little number from his album Jailhouse Religion)
  18. Never Be Your Darling - The Backsliders (one of my fave bands, very twangy country rock with an emphasis on rock....this is from their 1999 second album)
  19. El Paso - The Gourds (off Bolsa Del Agua, I like this one)
  20. Wasted - Lucero (off their debut, my fave album of theirs)

Drive-By Truckers - Alabama Ass Whoopin'

By Request, the out of print, ass-kickin', early DBT live album "Alabama Ass Whoopin'". This is worth having only for the intro to 18 Wheels of Love. The other stuff is good too, but that intro is legendary.....epic....one for the ages.

I got a request earlier for this, so here it is. Hope you guys enjoy.

In a deleted scene from Pulp Fiction, Mia Wallace tells Vincent that there are two kinds of people in the world.....Beatles people, and Elvis people....and that he looks like an Elvis person. Well I'm a Johnny Cash person so where does that leave me?

Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - The Revival Demos

This is a cool little disc of what the Gillian Welch masterpiece album Revival sounded like at one time. To me this sounds like they were channeling alot more Gram than Maybelle, and it makes for an interesting comparison. Some of the songs sound pretty good, but some of them just don't work well at all. I'm glad they took the minimalist approach to the final album.....either way these are great songs and it's really hard to mess them up. Just compared to the released album they don't compare.....at least not to my ears.

Todd Snider - Tales From Moondawg's Tavern (Stories Compilation)

Now this is a fan-fucking-tastic bootleg. Probably the best Todd boot I have come across, if not the best of any artist. First I need to give proper credit to the guy who collected, compiled, sweated over, and mastered this (that's right, he actually did some mastering to get all the tracks sounding perfect).......Rich Willis.....everybody thank Rich (THANKS RICH!). There is a good write up from him in the accompanying text file where he tells his story about this excellent compilation. If you're not a Todd Snider fan, DOWNLOAD THIS! If you are a Todd fan.....DO NOT HESITATE! DOWNLOAD THIS! If you like good music, specifically story songs and in the vein of John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Loudon Wainwright III, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc...(that's some heavy hitting company right there)...DOWLOAD THIS! If you just like good stories told by a master DOWNLOAD THIS! Hell, if you just like good bootlegs download this.....it will not be regretted

Drive-By Truckers - KEXP Seattle 7-3-07

This is a fantastic recording from a little over a week ago of the Drive-By Truckers on KEXP in Seattle, Washington playing new songs (and one old one) and talking about the forthcoming album. They were in town to play Willie's 4th of July picnic at The Gorge in Seattle. This is a really good recording, and fans will want to snatch this up. Really diggin' the new songs on here.
BTW, former trucker Jason Isbell's solo album was released this week - Available Here

Townes Van Zandt & Blaze Foley - Tribute To Clyde Buchanan 5-20-1984

Had some interest in Blaze Foley after the Blaze documentary vid, so here is a cool little recording of Blaze and his best friend Townes Van Zandt. The best I can tell is this was either a radio show, TV show, or just a benefit concert for Clyde Buchanan who was an Austin songwriter (and that's about all I know about him). What's cool about this is the little interviews in between the songs. Townes tells a nice story about Pancho & Lefty and a couple of cops. This also features one of my favorite Blaze tunes "Oval Room" which is as relevant now as it was then.

The Gourds - Live on KUT 1-31-06

Here is a nice little set from the Gourds which features some nice discussion and some damned fine music. This is from a radio show on KUT FM in Austin, TX in support of last year's "Heavy Ornamentals" album (which is good, go get it). If your not familiar with The Gourds, they are a texas band that blends folk, tex-mex, bluegrass, and other random stuff into one yummy stew called The Gourds. They are probably most famous for their oft-mislabeled cover of Snoop Dogg's Gin & Juice....which is great, but they are so much more than that. (AND IT'S NOT A FUCKING PHISH SONG PEOPLE!!!!)
Anyway, give this a listen whether you are an established fan, a new fan, or someone who just likes good music.

Some Youtube vids

Been checking out youtube, thought I'd post some. Remember when MTV used to actually show videos, and they were worth watching. Maybe we can call this TTV.....I dunno one too many t's in there.

up first: Wrinkle Neck Mules - Mecklenburg Country (Live at Cinco De Mayo Festival, Richmond....I posted a bootleg of this earlier)

Next up, one of my fave songs by one of my fave unheards: Corb Lund - Roughest Neck Around (this is some homemade video cause they took down the real one.....which is a shame cause it was a damned good video)

Here we have the official video of depression era-metal head Scott H. Biram's "Hit The Road"

Stones revivalist The Deadstring Brothers with their video for "Sacred Heart"

and let's finish this set out with something mellow.....Cat Power - "Lived in Bars"

A Truer Sampler 07 - The Bottle Rockets

OK, we're having a 4th of July blowout on Bottle Rockets!! The Bottle Rockets are the band of former Uncle Tupelo roadie/member Brian Henneman. He formed The Bottle Rockets just before Uncle Tupelo broke up and they actually opened for them on their final show (which I will be posting sometime soon). So in that respect, The Bottle Rockets are another band formed in the wake of Uncle Tupelo.....Son Volt, Wilco, & The Bottle Rockets.....the Big 3. Of those 3, the B-Rox are probably the most straigtforward rock band.....mid west style roots rock that is, and their first 3 albums are among the best in the whole genre of this thing somebody decided to call alt-country. Check out the song 'Radar Gun', one of my favorite songs of theirs off their 1995 masterpiece "The Brooklyn Side". If that don't make you a fan, well maybe 'Welfare Music' will, off the same album. The B-Rox are still going strong too, still touring, still putting out albums, check the links below.

Two Cow Garage - Live at Capitol Bowl 6-19-07

This one's for the guys over at altcountrytab.ca. Two Cow Garage are a band from Columbus, Ohio who like there twang served up loud, or maybe they like their loud served up with a side of twang. However you want to put it, these guys are definitley graduates (or dropouts) from the Replacements school of rock. Fans of Lucero and Slobberbone/Drams will probably dig this, it's pretty catchy stuff. This recording is not the best in the world, but it's tolerable....a little hard to hear, but crank it up and you can hear every drumstick snap.

From the accompanying text file: The band played in the bar of a bowling alley in West Sacramento. Great show, unfortunately only about 15-20 people were there to see it. Recorded from front row of seats/tables, a little left of center (near left PA). Small room -- only vocals went thru the PA.

Slaid Cleaves - Live on WDVR Nov. 26, 2000

Allright, this one is a much better introduction to Slaid. He is one hell of a songwriter, and this set really showcases his talents. Songs like "No Angel Knows", "Horseshoe Lounge", "Broke Down", "One Good Year" (one of my faves), and the epic "Breakfast In Hell". There is a second set to this show but I have looked and looked and have not been able to track it down, so if anyone has it, please share :)
