Slobberbone - Crow Pot Pie (Original Version)

Slobberbone's first album Crow Pot Pie is no doubt a classic in the Alt-Country genre. It has all the hallmarks of a great Alt-Country album, twang, crunchy guitars, rough vocals, punk rock edge, country rock sensibilities, songs about drinking and death... That album came out in 1996 on Doolittle Records, and has since been re-released on New West (who purchased Doolittle Records) in 2003.

This here is the original version of that seminal album, recorded a full 2 years prior and with a slightly different line-up (drummer Tony Harper and singer Brent Best being the only members on both versions). This version also features a slightly different cover, same picture but the Slobberbone logo and album name location are different. The music itself is slightly different as well, just a little rougher around the edges and with a differing track order. Not to mention a few songs omitted or replaced on the 1996 version.

The band recorded the album and distributed it themselves hoping to garner up support for gigs and maybe some radio airplay. The disc gained the attention of Doolittle and the rest as they say is history. Since 2 years had passed since the original recording, and the line-up had changed, the band decided to re-record the album for Doolittle, and that's the one that became the 1996 version....the now classic album Crow Pot Pie.
(the tracklist on the version I have differs slighty from what is listed on the Slobberbone website, I have left it as I recieved it)

Slobberbone disbanded in 2005 with most band members reforming as The Drams. However the band is currently in the midst of a Reunion Tour (although I think today is the last date....for now...)

Todd Snider - Countryfried

Well hell, I've had this one ready to go for about 2 weeks now but haven't had a chance to sit down at a computer and post it. I could have swore actually that I had posted it sometime in the past....but I'll be damned, I hadn't. So here it is. This is probably the most interesting Todd rarity thing I have. Imagine if you will if Todd's main sources of inspiration were not Kristofferson & Prine, but instead Waylon & Hank Jr. That would give you a pretty good idea of what to expect here. Some really good stuff here, though you can tell it's demo quality. Also a few hiccups here and there that I hope don't bother you guys too bad cause this is the best version I got. Highlight on here is the ode to the princess of country music Emmylou Harris....titled of course Emmylou....where Snider belts out "I hope them angels sing as good as Emmylou".

PS: To the guy who said he couldn't get sharebee to work and the other anti-sharbee-ites (:P) sorry about this and the next few still being in sharebee, I am looking for a suitable replacement but the search continues.

Todd Snider - Todd Sings Jerry Jeff

So here's the sister album to Todd Sings Kris. Basically it is of the same caliber, studio recordings Todd made available for his listserv/fan club the year following his Kristofferson tribute. Now Mr. Snider has stated many times that Jerry Jeff is a huge influence on him. In fact he has stated in one epic story how Jerry Jeff is actually the artist who influenced him to become a singer songwriter. Again not much to say about it, just a great tribute by an artist paying homage to one of his musical heroes. See Eighteen Minutes for more info. (Side note: 18minutes said there was artwork already, but the links were dead so I made new ones (love how this one turned out BTW). Also thanks to all the folks who sent this to me.)

Todd Snider - Todd Sings Kris

Todd Snider, always one to wear his influences on his sleeve, recorded this collection of Kristofferson songs in 2005 and made them available to members of his listserv/fan club. What you get here are sparse, studio quality, earnest tributes to one of Todd's musical heroes. There is really not much to say here, just that it's good, and if you don't have it you should. For more info see Eighteen Minutes.

Buffalo Springfield - The Missing Herd (Rarities and Live)

This is a treat right here. A set of rare and live proto country-rock pioneers Buffalo Springfield. If you don't know it was Stephen Stills and Neil Young's band in the mid 60's (along with Richie Furray of Poco). The second disc of this, the live stuff.....is damned good. The rarities are good too, but I find myself spinning the live disc alot more. Features some of my favorite Buffalo Springfield songs: Mr. Soul, A Child's Claim to Fame and Bluebird (check out the extended mix at the end of disc one and the live jam at the end of disc two). If you like Neil Young......you'll probably like this one........it's got Neil Young roaring guitar work all over it.

Todd Snider & Nancy Griffith - In Touch With The Devil You Know

Here's an interesting recording, Todd Snider being interviewed by Nancy Griffith about his 2006 masterpiece "Devil You Know". The real highlights here though are the duets they do together....man, I wish they would collaborate together on an album sometime.....really sweet harmonies coming from these two. Just listen to their take on "You Got Away With It" & Griffith's "It's A Hard Life".....superb.

Drive-By Truckers - Rare Tracks

OK, so we'll get to the sampler's shortly. First I wanted to post this, it's a little "EP" I worked up of some rare DBT tracks. Now half of these are from the "Blessing and a Curse" bonus disc....which I've already posted, but I felt they deserved to be on here. The real gems of course (unless you haven't heard the bonus disc either) are the cover of Skynyrd's "Every Mother's Son" and the Dirty South outtake "Great Car Dealer War". This actually makes a nice little cohesive EP and has satisfied me as something new to listen to until a new DBT album comes out (they are in the studio RIGHT NOW!)

Some other DBT news: They are currently doing their "Dirt Underneath Tour" where they are road testing their new songs. I also read there is some kind of documentary coming out possibly sometime this year.....HOLY SHIT, I cannot wait for that.

  1. Outfit - from "Austin City Limits Music Festival: 2003 Collection"

  2. Every Mother's Son - from "Under The Influence: A Jam Band Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd"

  3. Great Car Dealer War - Outake from "The Dirty South", from "Comes With A Smile Vol. 16" (Comes With A Smile is a British magazine)

  4. When The Well Runs Dry - from "Blessing and a Curse" Bonus Disc

  5. Like A Rolling Stone - from "Blessing and a Curse" Bonus Disc

  6. Careless (Live) - from "Blessing and a Curse" Bonus Disc

  7. Marry Me (Live) - from "Blessing and a Curse" Bonus Disc

  8. Dress Blues (Live) - from the official Drive-By Truckers website

Whiskeytown - Those Weren't The Days

I don't have much info on this, just that it was recorded sometime between Faithless Street & Stranger's Almanac and never released. I read somewhere that Ryan Adams wanted it released when Faithless Street was re-released but that never happened for whatever reason. I could not find any artwork online so I just whipped something up real quick.

Son Volt - B-Sides & Rarites

This is a nice collection of some unreleased and live songs. A few of these songs are available on the excellent Son Volt Retrospective (buy it if you don't have it), but the majority of these are fairly hard to come by. The ones that are on the retrospective are indicated with an asterisk. Some standout tracks are the "Windfall" demo, the wonderful cover of Towne Van Zandt's "Rex's Blues" with Kelly Willis (This track is so good it's worth having twice!), the acoustic version of "Drown", the Byrds' "Truck Stop Girl" (with Kelly Willis again)....pretty much all the Kelly Willis songs are outstanding. The live version of "Tear Stained Eye" is pretty damned good too. Also of note is the version of "Lookin' At The World Through A Windshield" on here which is different from the one on the retrospective (which is from the Rig Rog Deluxe album).
  1. Route [Demo]
  2. Windfall [Demo]
