Album Review: Jimbo Mathus - Jimmy The Kid

I've talked about Jimbo Mathus on here before, but never at any length. He's one of my favorite artists simply for the fact that he is so multi-talented and unpredictable. He is a virtual chameleon of american music releasing albums that shift from jazz, ragtime, blues, country, southern rock, swamp rock, blues rock, pre-war blues, gospel....basically if it was ever sang near the Mississippi river he is a master of it. Most folks may not recognize his name, but they have surely heard his voice back in the 90's when his band the Squirrell Nut Zippers had a runaway hit with the song Hell. I will touch more on that in a later post, and for now just focus on his latest album.
Now, if you have preconceived notions that this is going to be some kind of swing band album....throw those thoughts right out the damn window. As I alluded to earlier, Jimbo's solo career has been hard to pigeonhole into any one specific genre, and most of it has much more to do with the R.L Burnside and Charlie Patton than any kind of Count Basie or Bryan Setzer. This album here, happens to be his most country sounding album to date. With liberal flourishes of pedal steel, twangy licks, and heartbreak throughout.
The Album starts out with Good Old Time, which let's you know right off the bat what kind of album this is going to be....a COUNTRY album. Not to worry though, there are a couple splashes of blues and rock on here too. Such as the title track, the southern boogie of Tell It To The Judge, and the almost rockabilly Little Hand Big Gun. This album makes a very satisfying listen in the way it blends together perfectly like a whiskey on the rocks. The album as a whole is framed by some pretty solid country ballads such as Fallen Angel, Check Out Time, and Hiway At Night. My favorite song on here though has to be Tennessee Walker Mare. Which is a welcome addition to other horse songs in the genre such as Tennessee Stud, Chestnut Mare, and Caballo Diablo for those keeping track.

News: Todd Snider, Scott Miller, Wrinkle Neck Mules, etc...

Well there's a lot of stuff to talk about here. First off, that Ribbonpigeon album from the last post, well they emailed me to let me know that they just changed their name to The Only Sons and are working with a label for a distribution deal with that album and the one prior. Can't wait for that.

How about some Todd Snider news? Todd's new album The Excitement Plan is now available for pre-order. Due out on June 6, the $40 dollar deluxe pre-order box set features some cool items. Like each set will be signed and numbered by Todd (limited to 500), a DVD of the Peace Queer movie, a bonus disc of songs, 3 stickers, and even a Todd Snider flag! Pretty sweet.

Now on to Scott Miller. Those of you like myself who got the Appalachian Refugee demo CD AND pre-ordered the new album back in december (or was it november?) may have noticed a glaring omission from the album.....that omission was the sublime song Appalachian Refugee. Well Scott has heeded his fans call and decided to include the song on the street version of the album (due out Next Tuesday). Now here is the cool part, since the folks who pre-ordered the album did not get this track, he made it available for download on his site. This is a highly recommended download. Also while you are there check out his new site, he finally updated it to reflect the computer age :P

Wrinkle Neck Mules....I know there are a few fans of them out there :). Well good news as they have recorded over 30 songs and are thinking of releasing possibly a double album or some kind of box set sometime this year. Read about it here.

Some odds and ends. The new Steve Earle album kicks all kinds of ass, The Steeldrivers are in the studio working on their followup, Magnolia Electric Co. have a 7" EP coming out April 18th featuring 4 unreleased songs, and Jimbo Mathus just put out a new album called Jimmy The Kid that is somehow impossible to buy but you can listen to samples on his myspace page.

Jimbo Mathus and His Knockdown Society - Knockdown in Nashville Live 1998 (Out of Print)

Here is a sadly out of print album from James "Jimbo" Mathus. Fans of deep blues and country blues will want to check this out. This was recorded in support of his Songs For Rosetta album, the Rosetta in question being Rosetta Patton....Charlie Patton's daughter, and Jimbo's nanny as a child (hows that for blues cred). The band includes members of North Mississippi Allstars, so fans of them will also want to check this out.
Here are some release notes from Jimbo himself:
James "Jimbo" Mathus & His KnockDown Society, "KnockDown In Nashville". This CD was recorded in Nashville at Billy Blocks Western Beats Roots Revival in 1998 and was a benefit for Rosetta Patton who was Charlie Patton's daughter and Jimbo's nanny. The KnockDown Society consist of Stu Cole, who was also in Jimbo's Squirrel Nut Zippers, Cody & Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi AllStars, Greg Humphries, of Hobex, Hawkeye Jordan and Greg Bell. The 8 songs on this CD run from country blues to juke joint boogie to gospel and country rock. All songs, on this CD are by Jimbo except The Christian Life and I Got Mine. This CD is distributed on Jimbo's, KnockDown South Records.com. God bless Mississippi and pass the ANTISEPTIC...jimbo
