Steve Earle & The Del McCoury Band - Farm Aid Performance (Video)

This is their performance, I'm guessing from the same year the album was released, at farm aid.

Steve Earle & The Del McCoury Band - The Mountain

This is a great bluegrass album from Steve Earle with The Del McCoury Band. If you are not a fan of bluegrass this album may change your mind, and conversely....if you are not a fan of Steve Earle this album may change your mind. Standout Tracks include: Texas Eagle, Graveyard Shift, Outlaw's Honeymoon, Long Lonesome Highway Blues, and the title track

Emmylou Harris - at the Ryman video clips (Lodi, Guitar Town, Walls of Time)

Here are some great clips from the "At The Ryman" VHS. This version of Lodi is just amazing....I mean really amazing. Notice Sam Bush on the mandolin.

and her rendition of Guitar Town is equally impressive

how bout a little bluegrass - Walls of Time

Emmylou Harris & The Nash Ramblers - At The Ryman

This is a classic album right here folks, Emmylou Harris....the legend that she is....live at the most legendary venue in country music......The Ryman Auditorium.
This is the album that renewed interest in the ryman auditorium, which had sat dormant since 1974 at the time of this album (1992) and has since been restored and declared a landmark. This is a great set from Emmylou, she starts off strong with Steve Earle's "Guitar Town" and things only get better from there. Highlights include the aforemention "Guitar Town", a cover of CCR's "Lodi", Hank's "Half as Much", Johnny Cash's "Guess Things Happen That Way", Bill Monroe's "Walls of Time" and my favorite off the whole album: "It's a Hard Life Wherever You Go".
This was released on VHS back in '92 but they have not brought it over to DVD yet, it'll be a happy day in my household when they do.

Scott Miller - Weary Blues From Waitin'/Freedom's a Stranger (Video Clip)

and here to accompany the album is a killer Scott Miller vid. He has a Live album coming out next month.....can't hardly wait for it!

The V-Roys - Are You Through Yet?

This was the V-Roy's farewell album, the aptly titled "Are You Through Yet?".
Now I am a huge Scott Miller fan and this album does not disappoint. Some of my favorite tracks off this one are the superb covers: Neil Young's "Motion Pictures", The Replacements' "IOU", The La's "There She Goes", and Louden Wainwright's "Out of this World". This album is also a great overview of The V-Roys, one of my favorite bands.

A Statement

So you may be wondering why I post so many live albums, well it's because I love live albums. I feel a live album is where the soul of the artist truly shines. I also believe a live album is a great way to get into a new artist.....as it is kind of like a greatest hits album....only better, cause it's live.

Now on to other business. It has recently come to my attention that this blog has been called out by name as being affiliated with the infamous blogger Hanszun on the "anti-hanszun" site. Now the reasoning behind this is because I was one of the few links he had on his country music blog (a great name for a blog), and that all those links were really Hanszun. Now the truth of the matter is when I started this blog I was very green, I had no idea what I was doing. I had seen this "great name for a blog" site and another called "Honky Tonk Prison" and thought...."Hey, I could do this....only with newer country....you know alt-country", so I left a comment on his site pointing him to this site which he linked to. Now I had no idea who Hanszun was and I still barely do and I still don't really care. But what happened is that I (and Honky Tonk Prison) became guilty by association when really we were just naive bloggers trying to get traffic to our own blogs....at least in my case, can't really speak for HTP.
Anyway, what I ask folks is to just look at the history of this site.....if you care....and it becomes pretty obvious that I am not affiliated with this Hanszun character and I am certainly not affiliated with these anti-hanzun-ites. To give you a metaphor, which I think is wholly appropriate: if Hanszun = Saddam Hussein, then these anti-hanszun people = George W. Bush and his war on terror. You decide who's worse......the so called "Blogfather" or the Machiavellian crusaders who have a vendetta against him. As for me, just leave me the fuck alone and I'll be happy.

Now back to the music.

I just realized I forgot to put the link on the Bottle Rockets album. It's there now, sorry.

The Bottle Rockets - Live in Heilbronn Germany

This is a great live album from one of the most rockingest bands out there today, The Bottle Rockets. Well I was planning on doing a bottle rockets album, but that will have to wait as I left it at work. So to tide you over are some clips from the same show I will be posting tomorrow.

(The clip says June, but I know its from the same show cause he is wearing the same clothes as the clips that came with the CD)

Mike Cooley - Space City

Could there be a Cooley solo album coming out too....we can only hope. Here is a great clip of him doing "Space City" off Blessing and a Curse.

Patterson Hood - Eighteen

Word is there's a new Patterson Hood album coming out this year as well. Can't wait for that as his last solo album was excellent. Here is a very well done clip of him performing Alice Cooper's "Eighteen".

Jason Isbell - When The Well Runs Dry

They keep saying that Jason's solo album is coming out this year, can't wait for that, but until then this will have tide us over.

Drive-By Truckers - Live Acoustic & Otherwise

These are some great intimate recordings of one of my favorite bands, The Drive-By Truckers. The first disc is comprised of 2 great acoustic sets, the first is an in-store acoustic at Waterloo Records in Austin, Texas on August 22, 2003 where they run through some songs off Decoration Day. The other is at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta, Georgia on May 1, 2004 where the play some old familiars off Decoration Day and some then new songs off The Dirty South. To finish up the first disc we have a great performance of Jason singing Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927 at Manchester Academy in Manchester, England. This was recorded shortly after Hurricane Katrina and the band played this song in tribute.

The second disc starts off with an absolutely killer in-studio performance at KBCO 97.3FM in Boulder, Colorado from August 16, 2004 which is comprised of an interview and 2 songs from The Dirty South. Next up we have the real prize here, a set of tunes recorded at what sounds like a house party at Mike Cooley's house on December 29, 2003. This is a real laid back performance and you gotta love all the chatter, singin' along and bottles clangin'. That would have been one hell of a party to have been to, and thankfully someone had the foresight to record it.

Chris Knight - Video & Interview (in Ottersum Netherlands)

WOW! You gotta love the internet. Here is some video of the same show, and an interview before the show....FANTASTIC! Enjoy.

Show (Becky's Bible, Rural Route, Enough Rope)

Interview (wow, the audio sync gets really bad on this the more it plays)

Chris Knight - Live in Ottersum, Netherlands Feb. 04, 2007

Here is a nice little acoustic Chris Knight show from last month in the Netherlands. The info I have says it is in Ottersum, CC Roepaen The Netherlands and that Ty Tyler is with him. I don't know where that is or who Ty Tyler is, but it's a good show none-the-less. The stark arrangements of these songs really bring the lyrics out and the stories they weave really jump out at you. There is some nice between song chatter too where he talks about his inspirations. Only dissapointment is the fact that "If I Were You" is not played.

Old 97's - Over the Cliff (Music Video)

Heres a cool video I found on youtube, taken from the bloodshot records DVD.

Old 97's - Live Mix

This 2-disc set is comprised of a full concert at the Crocodile Cafe on May 29, 1999. Their full Austin City Limits set from Jan. 26, 1998, and a few tracks from the Gypsy Tea Room on an unknown date which are primarily Buck Owens covers. The highlight here is definitely the Austin City Limits set which is all songs from Too Far To Care. The Crocodile Cafe concert is good in it's own right, as I think the songs off Fight Songs sound much better live than in studio.

Some vintage Waylon here. One of my favorite songs of his.

Billy Joe Shaver - Black Rose (Austin City Limits 1984)

Billy Joe & the late Eddy Shaver ripping it up on this one. One of my favorite BJS songs.

Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver, Kimmie Rhodes, & Kris Kristofferson - Outlaw Country Live From Austin TX

In Honor of my favorite show on saturday nights, I present to you a recording of one of my favorite episodes of Austin City Limits.

Recorded in 1996, this honky tonk supergroup gave us a performance much like what you would expect this gathering to sound like on any one of their front porches. They sit around joking singing songs back and forth, trading licks....trying to one up the next guy. Highlights on this disc include well all of it, but specifically the middle part where they play a game of one upmanship with spiritual songs, the all-together sing along of "on the road again", and my favorite.....Waylon's "I'd have been out of jail". Give it a listen or two.

Ray Wylie Hubbard - Resurrection (Music Video)

Here's one you're not likely to see on CMT boys. Ray Wylie Hubbard is one of my other favorite singers, and this video for "Resurrection" is off his newest album "Snake Farm" which I highly reccomend.

Hayes Carll - It's A Shame (Live at the Saxon Pub)

This guy is my new favorite singer, so I can't get enough of him.

Todd Snider - Near Truths & Hotel Rooms (Live)

So yesterdays post was just a primer of things to come! Here we have Todd Sniders fantastic 2003 live album "Near Truths & Hotel Rooms".
This is a great album and a great introduction to Todd Snider if you are not familiar with him. He is one of the best songwriters around today and also an excellent storyteller, and this album showcases both of those traits. This is Todd at his best, just him a guitar and an occasional harmonica. Standout tracks include: D.B. Cooper, I Can't Complain, Beer Run (which you may have heard on the horrible Bob & Tom Show), Statistician's Blues....but the absolute highlight of the whole album is The Story of the Devil's Backbone Tavern. Give it a listen

Storytime with Todd Snider

So I still haven't been able to up anything new.....I tried but after it spent 3 hours uploading it said "Filesize too large". You think they would tell you something like that upfront.

anyway, to tide you over is a great performance by Todd Snider where he explains the inspiration for his song "If Tomorrow Never Comes".

Some More Live Shows (Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Sean Reefer, Hank III)

Well, I haven't had a chance to up anything lately so to tide you over here's a few more live shows from Archive.org. These are some hardcore honkytonk sounds right here (well at least 'til you get to Hank III's second set).

Dale Watson tearin' it up at Murphy's in North Carolina. Some of my favorite tracks off this are "Ain't A Cow In Texas", "Truckin' Queen", the classic "That's Country My Ass", and his take on "Fox on the Run"......there's a lot of great truckin' songs on this set too. If you don't know who Dale Watson is, he sounds kinda like Junior Brown.....but a lot rowdier and more whiskey.....You know that scene in blues brothers where they play at the honky tonk with the chicken wire and the beer bottles flyin'.......Dale Watson would have been the house band for that place.

Wayne Hancock - At The Continental Club Sept. 20, 2003

This is a great set from Wayne "The Train". Give it a listen to find out how he got that nickname. This is pure honky tonk music.....bass fiddle and all. This is the guy Hank III got his country act from. If you like Hank Williams, you will like Wayne Hancock.

Sean Reefer & The Resin Valley Boys - At The Continental Club April 24, 2004

Have you ever wondered what Hank Williams would have sounded like if he sang about smokin' dope instead of drinkin'.......well now you know. If you like Hank III (the country version) and Wayne Hancock....there's a pretty good chance you'll like this. This also kind of reminds me of BR5-49, so if you like them check this out. They do some pretty mean Hank covers too.

Hank III - At The Lincoln Theatre April 8, 2006

This was the last show of his tour last year and III goes all out on this one.......he sounds ROUGH on this one boys.....I mean I ain't ever heard him sound like this. His voice is on the verge of being shot....either from all the touring, 5 shots or rot-gut whiskey, or he just took a monster bong hit of the sticky icky......probably all three. Anyway this is a great set, probably my favorite I have heard from him, and I have heard alot......really raw.....like June says to Johnny in Walk the Line......"Sharp like a razor, steady like a train".
The first set of this is where he shines....I'm not too big on his hellbilly and assjack stuff......but the country stuff is so good I'm willin' to overlook it.
Hank III sounds just like how you would expect the bastard grandson of Hank Williams to sound.

Some Live Shows (Hayes Carll, DBT, Corb Lund)

Here's a few of my favorite live shows over at Archive.org

Hayes Carll - At the Continental Club Jan. 21, 2006

If you haven't heard Hayes Carll, then you owe it to yourself to check this guy out. Hands down one of the best singer-songwriters I have heard in years. In the vein of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Ray Wylie Hubbard, & Buddy Miller. The fact that this guy is largely unknown outside of Texas boggles my mind. This guy is the future of real music.

________________________

Drive-By Truckers - At Smith's Old Bar May 1, 2004
A nice little acoustic set from the truckers from 2004 featuring then new songs from "Decoration Day"

________________________

Corb Lund - At Cheatham Street Wharehouse Nov. 30, 2006
Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans hail from Alberta Canada and are putting out some of the best country you can get now adays. This show was a double bill with Hayes Carll (his performance is also available on archive) and just like him it's a damn shame more people don't know about him. Some of my favorite cuts from this show: Roughest Neck Around, Hurtin' Albertan, and Time to Switch to Whiskey.

Johnny Cash - Louisiana Hayride Recordings (1955-1962)

Continuing on with our classic country weekend, and in defiance of some of the events that unfolded last night.....I present to you some early Johnny Cash radio performances.

Recorded on the Louisiana Hayride radio show between the years of 1955 thru 1962, these recordings capture John R. at his earliest and most raw. Standout tracks include a rare performance of "It Ain't Me Babe" with June Carter (with some great cutting up at the beginning), a rare perfomance of "Luther Played the Boogie" and well pretty much all of them......and hearing Johnny Cash talk about donuts is a novelty in and of itself.
  1. Ballad of a Teenage Queen
  2. Big River
  3. Busted
  4. Five Feet High and Rising
  5. Donut Commercial/Give My Love To Rose
  6. Goodbye Little Darlin'
  7. I Guess Things Happen That Way
  8. Hey Porter
  9. I Walk The Line
  10. It Ain't Me Babe (with June Carter)
  11. Luther Played The Boogie
  12. Orange Blossom Special
  13. The Rebel, Johnny Yuma
  14. Rock Island Line
  15. So Doggone Lonesome

There is a newer version of this that was released a few years ago and is a little more comprehensive but it is also out of print. Here's to hoping that a definitive version of these recordings make their way out of the Johnny Cash archives.

OK, FUCK THIS!

Looks like I got caught in the middle of some weird internet blogger feud that frankly I could give 2 shits about. I don't think I will be restoring my links cause these Hanszun guys freak me out. Apparently he has nothing better to do than harrass other blogs and get their links deleted cause only he is allowed to have a music blog. That is what I gathered anyway from this link:

It was fun while it lasted guys, and thanks for the kind comments.

maybe I'll see some of you guys around, until then........Keep on Twangin'

Merle Haggard - Fightin' Side of Me (Live 1970)

In honor of one of our fallen compadres, it's a Klassic Kuntry® weekend here at A Truer Sound. So without further delay, I present to you what I consider to be The Hag's greatest live album.

Recorded in Philidelphia, this album is a great companion piece to the live in Muskogee album from the previous year in much the same way that Johnny Cash's "Folsom" & "San Quentin" albums are. Standout tracks include his typical hits but specifically the song "Harold's Super Service" (only available on this album) and the impersonations medley which includes impersonations of Marty Robbins, Hank Snow, Buck Owens, & Johnny Cash. Also worth mentioning is the frantic version of "Fightin' Side of Me" which has alway been my favorite version.

Gob Iron - Death Songs For The Living

I've been on a son volt/Jay Farrar kick here lately (thanks to the new son volt album), so I present you Jay's side project from last year with Anders Parker......Gob Iron.

This album is as close to uncle tupelo that you can get with out hopping in a time machine and going back to 1991. Very reminiscent of UT's "March 16-20" album. These are mostly covers and re-interpratations of old folk songs. Standout tracks include Farrar's "Death's Black Train", "Hard Times", "Nicotine Blues", & Parkers excellent "Hills of Mexico". Also included is a another Carter Family cover like only Jay can do......."East Virginia Blues". So if you like acoustic Uncle Tupelo.......you will surely dig this...and if you like son volt, the last track "Buzz and Grind" is classic son volt material.

Drive By Truckers - A Blessing in Disguise (Bonus Disc from Blessing and a Curse)

One more treat for your hearin' ears......The bonus disc from DBT's "A Blessing and a Curse"

Only a limited amount of these were handed out at certain stores for pre-orders of "Blessing and a Curse". Includes 4 tracks, 2 unreleased and 2 that are from the "Live at the 40 Watt DVD"

  • 1. When The Well Runs Dry
  • 2. Like A Rolling Stone
  • 3. Careless (Live)
  • 4. Marry Me (Live)

Now I am a huge DBT fan (just so you know) and the first track off this is definitely the standout track, another solid Isbel song. Their take on Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" is also interesting because we finally get to hear Shonna sing!

Chris Knight - The Trailer Tapes

Ok, another treat for you guys.....Chris Knight - The Trailer Tapes

Due to be released in April this is a collection of songs Chris recorded in 1996 before he ever released an official album. These tracks are bare.....just him and a guitar. If you've never heard of Chris Knight he is an excellent singer-songwriter in the vein of Steve Earle. Standout tracks on this album include a killer version of "House and 40 Acres", "Spike Driving Blues" and an early version of his classic "If I Were You"
