Out Of Print & Hard To Find: Johnny Paycheck - The Real Mr. Heartache (The Little Darlin' Years)

This one is a request from a buddy over at altcountrytab.ca who pointed out to me that this collection was out of print and going for outrageous prices over at amazon and other outlets. I'll admit, that while I am familiar with early Johnny Paycheck, I was not familiar with this collection....and I'm glad I searched it out....cause it's a damn fine collection. Folks who dig early George Jones (and that excellent Hard Core Honky Tonk collection (also out of print) I posted a while back) will UNDOUBTEDLY love this. Matter of fact anyone who loves traditional HARD CORE HONKY TONK will love this! These tracks are culled from Paycheck's first several albums covering the years of 1966 - 1969. They quickly went out of print on vinyl, only to be remastered and revived by this album here in 1996.....which has subsequently also went out of print. Shame really, cause this is some of the best and purest country music you are likely to hear.

Johnny Cash - Strawberry Cake (Out of Print and Rare 1976 live album)

While this may not be the best Johnny Cash live album (that distinction goes to either Folsom or San Quentin depending on who you ask and on what day), it's certainly the most interesting. Interspersed with stories and dialouge and pure interaction with the audience. This album makes you realize that Johnny Cash's career did not suddenly end in 1970 and pick back up in 1994 as some would like to believe. No, The 70's were a fruitful time for the Man In Black, while certainly not as classic and legendary as his 50's and late 60's performances and albums, he was certainly at the top of his game as a performer.

This album is a testament to that, and it's a wonder in this day and age how an album like this remains out of print. If you are looking for Johnny Cash singing the hits, look elsewhere, no Folsom Prison Blues performed at this show (could this be the only Johnny Cash live album to NOT have Folsom on it?). Only hits to speak of are Big River and possibly I Got Stripes (with the band yelling out between verses). Includes an amazing rendition of Rock Island Line which he plays for Lonnie Donegan (who had a hit in the UK with Rock Island Line) who is in the crowd.

The most interesting part of the show however is when June starts to sing Church In The Wildwood but is interrupted as the theater (the London Palladium) must be evacuated for an IRA bomb threat.

The Backsliders - Southern Lines

You wanted more Backsliders...you got more Backsliders. This is their final album from 1999, and while not as good as it's predecessor it's still damned good. This is another group I wish would get back together (take a page from Blue Mountain's book guys) and put out a killer album. As mentioned in the comments section of previous backsliders posts, there are numerous bands who have this band name. A blues band from Texas, a rock band from Australia...but to me, the Backsliders will always be a BAR BAND FROM NORTH CAROLINA!!

Red Star Belgrade - Where The Sun Doesn't Shine (Out of Print)

Red Star Belgrade are one of those groups that I just love for no explainable reason. I've never met another fan, and I've only been able to turn one other person onto their music that I know of. To me they capture everything I love about music. Rawness especially. They really remind me of Neil Young and Crazy Horse....that distorted sloppy guitar on the edge of falling apart yet still so beautiful, lyrics that had no choice but to rise from the singers deepest depths of his psych only to blend perfectly with those fabulous crunchy guitar riffs. My introduction to the band was a 10" single I bought for $3 at my local record shop called "Lose Your Temper Gain An Injury"....one spin of that and I was hooked. A year or so later I see this CD in the same store and snatched it up....it has been a favorite ever since.

Now a little history of the band, don't bother searching for them, because in the age before the world wide web it seemed like a good idea to name your band after a prestigious soccer franchise known to everyone in the world except of course anyone in the US. RSB consists of Bill Curry and his wife Grahma Harris. Bill does the guitar, songwriting and singing, with his wife filling in the rest. The story I heard was that Bill was a well known music critic and writer for NME and he got fed up with all the BS and decided to start his own band. Well I for one am glad he did. In 1995 they released 2 singles, the previously mentioned "Lose Your Temper" and the haunting "Union, SC" about child murderer Susan Smith. That song landed them a gig on the Today show as Susan Smith was a big story back then . I've never seen this footage but would love to as I wonder how they got around the dreaded "n" word. This national attention gave RSB the exposure they needed and within a year their first full length album was out on a small indie out of Chapel Hill, NC. Not sure if it got national distribution, but it sure made it to my neck. They've done a few more albums since then, and as far as I know they are still going (I Hope). Enjoy

Here's a super oldie but a goodie. This is Ray Wylie Hubbard's first album from 1975. Very hard to find, and very out of print. Notice the early version of Portales on here. This is pretty different from his newer sleazy greasy beautiful blues type stuff, but not THAT much different...you can still tell it Ray Wylie. Fans of Jerry Jeff Walker and Guy Clark will definitely want to check this one out

Well, this is kind of straying a bit from the Out Of Print Classics format because this is a compilation, but in my opinion this is the finest George Jones comp that has ever been made. Just look at that track list and see how much early possum gold is on there! This right here ain't no "High Tech Redneck" or "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" folks....this is THE POSSUM, singing the best damned tear jerkers ever! I can't say enough how damned good this aptly named comp is, so I won't. Just download it and see for yourself.

Out Of Print: The Backsliders - Throwin' Rocks At The Moon

So I think I'm going to start throwing up some...what I'm calling out of print classics, starting with this one. This was The Backsliders, from Raleigh, NC's first full length album from way back in 1997, and buddy it's a good one. Fans of the Bottle Rockets, and just loud twangy bar band country rock will surely enjoy this one. Standout tracks: the title track, Hey Sheriff, Paper Doll World, Last Train, If you Talk To My Baby, Broken Wings, and hell just about the whole damned thing.

John Hartford - Aero-plain (out of print)

A strangely out of print album, especially considering you can buy officialy released outtakes collection of the same album (if you like this, you should definitely check that out). This is considered a landmark bluegrass album....one of the best of the so called hippie-grass movement of the early 70s that included guys like New Grass Revival, Old and In The Way, David Grisman, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, etc...you know, the original jam bands (the ones that didn't suck). This album also has the distinction of having one of the coolest album covers ever. Released in 1971, it's a must have for any fan of bluegrass, folk, or just damned good music.

Old Crow Medicine Show - Troubles Up and Down The Road EP

Might as well throw this in while I'm at it. This is a limited edition EP that was released in 2001, I'm guessing sometime after Eutaw. This is one of my favorite Old Crow discs.....it's just a young eagar band playing good old timey music. The first track Rub Alcohol Blues is killer. Alos features probably the earliest recorded version of Wagon Wheel (barring Bob Dylan's original) that has a nice steel guitar on it.

Someone started talking about Prince's Hot Chicken Shack which is down the way from the old Crows nest on Dickerson Rd. Dill pickles and greasy chicken laid over two slices of Bunny Bread. Of course we immediately started thinking about our buddy Dub who kept Prince's in business through some of the lean years. Then someone remembered a recording we made for Dub back in September, the Dub dub as it was then known.

Old Crow Medicine Show - Live At The World Cafe

Neil Young - Time Fades Away (Out of Print)

This is reportedly Neil Young's least favorite album. Must conjure up bad memories for him....whatever the case this album has been out of print since shortly after it's release in 1973. Known as the first album of Neil's "Ditch Trilogy" (which includes On The Beach & Tonight's The Night) after reaching success with Harvest and not knowing how to handle it.....to quote Neil he "headed for the ditch". It's a pretty good album and a shame that it's officially unavailable. That may be remedied sometime soon what with all the Neil Young Archive releases coming out (and damn how good was Fillmore and Massey Hall....amazing releases).

Great little out of print live album here from 2000. I'm a big fan of Kieren Kane and Kevin Welch be it together or solo. I'm especially fond of their Kane, Welch, Kaplin albums (with Fats Kaplin). I've put a few of their songs on some of my Truesounds samplers so I'm sure you guys have heard 'em. They have a new album that just came out that is simply titled "Kane Welch Kaplin" and it's excellent.....got some killer artwork by Kieren too. This set right here though, apparently was only released in limited numbers in Australia.....not sure the story, but just know it's now out of print and killer.

Doug Sahm (with Augie Meyers & The Gourds) - S.D.Q. 98 (Live)

Incredibly little out of print album here. Recorded live about a year before Doug Sahm's, we find him with his trusty sidekick Augie Meyers & backed by none other than The Gourds back when they were fairly unknown. The Gourds are Sahm disciples, so they fit in perfect as his backing band. So much so that I wouldn't have known it was the Gourds had it not been on the cover. Uncle Tupelo fans might recognize one of the songs on here....that's right "Give Back The Key To My Heart" which Doug wrote & recorded in the mid 70's and sang backup on Uncle Tupelo's version.

Earl Scruggs - His Family and Friends (ft. Byrds, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Doc Watson)

Another criminally underrated out of print album from Earl Scruggs. This is the one people.....this album is fantastic. Recorded in 1969 for a television documentary, not released on vinyl till 1971. This album is where that Byrds clip a few posts back came from. At the time Earl's son Randy was still in high school, of which there are some humerous soundbites about during his performance of Black Mountain Rag. Features such heavyweights as Doc Watson, The Byrds, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan (though he doesn't sing). If you are a fan of the Dirt Band's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" album.....this is right up your alley. And besides, where else are you gonna hear 1. foggy mt. breakdown played on a synthesizer, and 2. Earl Scruggs speak out against the Vietnam war?

Earl Scruggs Revue - Live at Kansas State

Here's a long out of print album from the aforementioned Earl Scruggs Revue. Released in 1972, this gives a good glimpse of what Earl Scruggs was into at the time.....not your typical bluegrass. After splitting with Lester Flatt in the late 60's, he formed a new band with his sons. With a loose atmosphere, amplification, and a slew of songs from the likes of Dylan and Baez. This is a good album....a fun album. You can tell Scruggs was having a blast playing music with his family.

If anybody has the album that came out shortly before this called "Family & Friends" (also out of print) please share, I've been looking and looking for a digital copy of it.

Sleazefest '94

Ok, this one is for RYP @ Twighlightzone. If you haven't checked his sight out, and you like trashy, surfy, twangy, garage rock sounds.....then you really need to check it out. Anyway, this is the official CD recording of the inaugural Sleazefest in Chapel Hill, North Carolina which took place late August 1994. Organized by Rick Miller of Southern Culture on The Skids as an answer to all the "lollapalooza" and "woodstock '94" type festivals happening that year, he assembled a who's who of trash rock, rockabilly, and garage rock, called it Sleazefest, and held it at a local BBQ joint. Just listening to this you can tell this must have been one hell of a party, and I guarantee you there was more than one guitar neck covered in BBQ sauce fingerprints before this was over. REQ: Centro-Matic - Line Connection Aim

As promised, Centro-Matic's out of print 1997 cassette "Line Connection Aim". Now I don't like this one near as good as the other one, but there are some cool songs on it like the beatlesesque "Most Everyone Will Find", "The Little Guitars", and "Nothing Could Be Better". I love how you can hear the phone ringing in a few spots too.
Oh, and a correction from the other post....I said they were one of Patterson Hood's Favorite bands.....well apparently they are his favorite band. You can read all about it on their myspace page (linked below).
