From The Archives: A Truer Easter

Sorry about the lack of posts folks, just a weird time for me right now. In the meantime, enjoy some songs about Jesus that won't make you fall asleep in the pew!

Who says songs about Jesus have to suck. Here's a good set of mostly straightforward gospel songs (mostly). First I want to talk about the cover image I used. Now these three crosses, exactly like those in the picture are all over this area....every road just about you will see them. They first started appearing around here in the mid to late 80's and there were many local legends about them. These legends state that a local millionaire had a near death experience during which he had a vision of God who told him he would spare his life if he spent the rest of it building these wooden crosses and placing them beside highways. Other parts of the legend state that some folks didn't take too kindly to these crosses being on their land or near their land or what have you and tried to tear them down. Supposedly one guys tractor suddenly caught on fire, one guy's boat engine died and he was stranded in a lake. One guy even supposedly had a heart attack whilst trying to remove the wooden crosses. There were also stories of lightning striking them but nothing happening, and them surviving forest fires, floods and hurricanes.
Now I don't know how true those last parts are, but a little research has confirmed that the man in question was indeed a succesful businessman from Craigsville, WV named Bernard Coffindaffer. He had a heart attack in 1982 which was when he recieved his holy vision and life's mission. Pretty interesting stuff I thought.

From The Archives: Ray Wylie Hubbard - Stingaree 2007

Got a great comment from a 12 year old asking for this and it made my day. I love when young kids are passionate about music. So this is for the all the little 12 year old music lovers out there!

Of course this is well worth reposting in it's own right. Ray's set at the inaugural Stingaree Music Festival. This years Stingaree Festival is taking place May 29th - 31st featuring Hayes Carll, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and the one man buzz machine Ryan Bingham.

I've made no secret of my love for Ray Wylie Hubbard, I will get to that in more detail in my RWH sampler post. But first here is a killer bootleg from the Stingaree Music Festival, or as Ray calls it "Hayesapalooza". This was the first stingaree festival, the brainchild of Hayes Carll (I love that guy too) to showcase some of his friends and favorite artists and held in his "base camp" town of Crystal Beach, Texas. And man what a lineup they had....I would have loved to have gone: Todd Snider, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hayes Carll, Corb Lund, The Dedringers....man talk about a killer line up. This is the first of what I hope is many bootlegs from this festival.

And what a great one it is too....Ray Wylie puts on one hell of a show and has some of the best banter you will hear. This also contains probably THE BEST version of "Wanna Rock And Roll" I have heard to date.

From The Archives: Steve Earle - Radio Sessions 2002-2007

So I'm just trying to clear out some requests while I got time, and this is one of them. This is actually a really good set, and anyone who thinks Steve is not worth listening to after Transcendental Blues should give this a listen.

I put this together from 4 different radio shows I had. The outcome is a pretty damned good listen if say so myself. Starting in 2002 in support of Jerusalem, going into 2005 in support of Revolution, and ending with two shows from this year one in preperation, and one in support of Washington Square Serenade. Some nice older tunes on here too. All in all it's a pretty nice set of tunes, mostly acoustic and laid back with the occasional record scratching on the last show....still don't know how I feel about that, but it's not near as bad as it seems like it should be. There are some very interesting interview segments throughout as well.

Also look for Steve in an upcoming play based on Howard Zinn's "People's History of The United States" (a great read if you haven't read it).

From The Archives: Old 97's and Chris Whitley - KCRW Sessions

This is probably one of the strangest things I've ever posted, and I often wonder why I did not just seperate these two? They really don't go together at all, and there is nothing really to tie them together....but hey....consider it a double bill....two for one type of thing.

This is an interesting pairing, but I got it like this, so I left it like this. One thing they both had in common at the time was that they were both just starting to reach the top of their games. The Old 97's set is amazing. I mean they are doing promotion for "Wreck Your Life", the songs are still fresh, and the band is hungry. What's particularly intersting are the interview segments....really took me back. I mean they didn't even know what to call their music cause the word "Alt Country" hadn't been popularised yet. And they talk about getting ready to do a show with "a great new band out of chapel hill called whiskeytown"........"they say that kid Ryan isn't gonna make it to 28". This really took me back, cause this was around the time I was really starting to dig into what we now call Alt Country. A great set. The Whitley set ain't too bad either.....searing blues rock as expected.

From The Archives: Drive By Truckers - The Dirt Underneath I O W A (10-18-07)

Trying to clear some requests out. This one I'm listening to now and it's really hitting the spot to tide me over 'til The Big To Do. As stated below The Dirt Underneath tour was in support of Brighter Than Creation's Dark. It features some of those songs, and some older goodies. The best thing about this is the stripped down nature of the songs and the addition of steel guitar and keys to them. Listening to this 2 years later and having become familiar with Brighter Than Creation's Dark I really wish they had played "Perfect Timing", but the version of "Get Your Ass On The Plane", "My Sweet Annette" and a near bluegrass rendition of "Daddy's Cup" on here more than makes up for that little omission.

Killer little DBT boot here from there just wrapped up (I think) Dirt Underneath tour. Now if you don't know, the Dirt Underneath tour was a laid back tour (hence the sit down performances) and featured Soul Session legend Spooner Oldham. There are a few new songs on here worth checking out too, not to mention some seldom heard oldies.....like my favorites "panties in your purse" and "tails facing up". Can't wait for the new album to come out. It's called "Brighter Than Creation's Dark" and it's due to be released January 22nd of '08.

From The Archives: Slobberbone - Last Show 3-13-05

Got a request for this the other day and wanted to get it in before I go out of town for a week. If I remember right, once upon a time I promised a Slobberbone sampler....well obviously I flaked on that, but never fear fine readers, because lucky for you Ninebullets.net's resident badass Romeo Sid Vicious recently created a "Through The Whiskey Glass" compilation of Slobberbone that is way better than anything I could have come up with. How 'bout some live slobberbone to kick off spring. This is probably the best boot I have found of theirs....not only because of the significance of it being their last show, but it's just a damned good boot. They play like it's their last show....running through almost all their best songs in a single night....plenty of debauchery as well. Here is a neat little write up I found on the show itself:

It was a sad day for Texas music on March 13, 2005. That’s when people from as far away as Europe crowded into a sold-out Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton to bid farewell to the State’s reigning ‘best bar band’. That final show was short on covers and long on remembrances, for the band and the audience alike. They resurrected a “Barrel Chested” era documentary film to kick off the night, standing quietly onstage while the film rolled on a screen set up near the entrance. Then they played for a little over two hours. While the album of the night seemed to be their second release, “Barrel Chested”, they managed to cover their entire career, but went sparingly on their last and most over-produced record, “Slippage”. Fittingly enough, the crowd seemed drunker than usual, even for a Slobberbone show. So while the beer and whiskey soaked crowd raised their bottles and glasses, the band kept playing songs about, mostly, drinking. When they first emerged on the scene way back in the early to mid 90s, they were compared to Uncle Tupelo, just like every other “alt country” rock band at the time; only these guys not only had a sense of humor, they, at least to this observer, didn’t take themselves quite as seriously as that by-then-defunct Illinois band. And like UT in the early days, their songs were part punk-rock, part southern-rock and part country. They mixed banjos and fiddles with the blaring electric guitars and channeled the feedback into glorious melodic anthems to lost love, lost dreams, and whiskey. Over the years, it became apparent that they probably owed more in the way of influence to Neil Young and Crazy Horse than to Uncle Tupelo. And now that it’s all over, it looks like frontman Brent Best will continue to play the occasional solo show and the rest of us, at least locally, can wait for the inevitable reunion shows. As far as bands go, it was a great run. Here’s to them!

From The Archives: Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, & Bobby Rambo - Three Teardrops Tavern 1992

I have gotten a couple requests to re-up this because there was a problem with one of the zip files. This thing is so damned good. Like I said below basically just Townes and Guy and Ray Wylie and Bobby Rambo are filler. Fantastic sound, and I also love the simplicity of the artwork I made for this one.

Someone left a comment asking where to start with Townes Van Zandt and if I have any shows of his....well of course I have some shows, and here's a brand spankin' new one. All I have to say about this one is DAMN!! The sound on this one....EXCELLENT, the performances on this....EXCELLENT!!
This is basically a Townes and Guy show with Ray Wylie and Bobby Rambo thrown as a bonus. After listening to this a couple times, I'm honestly surprised this hasn't seen official release yet....it's that good. The version of Townes' "Marie" on here kills me. Other bonuses on here....learn a little back story to Guy's L.A. Freeway, learn why they call it the Three Teardrops Tavern (now a Duccati dealership). Highlight is by far the Townes and Guy singing trading songs off and singing together at the end.
This is the first I've ever heard of Bobby Rambo, but I'm very impressed by what's on here, an artist I will have to find more about. Oh and if you still want to know where to start with Townes, get Live at The Old Quarter (especially if you like this)

Another request here. This one WELL worth reposting. I also whooped up a quick cover for it as I had posted this back before I started making covers for anything that didn't have one.

 This is a nice collection of some unreleased and live songs. A few of these songs are available on the excellent Son Volt Retrospective (buy it if you don't have it), but the majority of these are fairly hard to come by. The ones that are on the retrospective are indicated with an asterisk. Some standout tracks are the "Windfall" demo, the wonderful cover of Towne Van Zandt's "Rex's Blues" with Kelly Willis (This track is so good it's worth having twice!), the acoustic version of "Drown", the Byrds' "Truck Stop Girl" (with Kelly Willis again)....pretty much all the Kelly Willis songs are outstanding. The live version of "Tear Stained Eye" is pretty damned good too. Also of note is the version of "Lookin' At The World Through A Windshield" on here which is different from the one on the retrospective (which is from the Rig Rog Deluxe album).

This was quite a find right here, and someone clearly put a lot of effort into this. Not sure who, as they never name themselves, but they compiled this and did all the artwork and everything.....so thanks Mr. Richard Buckner fan. This is my favorite Buckner era, as I don't care much for his newer work. But this "box set" is good and a damn good starter for someone unfamiliar with Mr. Buckner. I would describe him as....well imagine if Dwight Yoakam were a folk singer....well that's not a very good description....he has a similar timber to his voice as Dwight is about the only commonality. He is a mighty fine songwriter though, and put out some killer albums back in the mid 90's (specifically "Bloomed) which is the era this box set focuses on. One more time though, I would like to thank the original compiler of this fantastic set. It's obvious they put alot of love into it.

How would I describe The Meat Purveyors, well "frantic lesbian bluegrass" is my favorite way to describe it. These guys are good, damned good. They take traditional bluegrass and add just the right amount of punk abandon to it. And did I mention they can play......some damn fined instrumentalists. Anyway, give it a listen if you dig bluegrass. Even if you don't dig bluegrass, give it a listen, they just might convert you.

Fans of "The Gourds" & "Bad Livers" will probably dig this as well.

From The Archives: Manassas - Live In Amsterdam 1972

I'm re-posting this because there is a new Manassas album out you may not be aware of. It's called Pieces, and it consists unreleased tracks and outtakes from the sessions of Manassas' only two albums, 1971's Manassas, and 1972's Down The Road. Word is the album is part of a series that Stephen Stills (Manassas' front man) started releasing with last years Just Roll Tape, and will include a box set and even some session recordings with Hendrix.

This news and Neil Young archives means it's a great time to be a country rock fan!

I'm pulling this from another blog, I found it in the archives a while back.....and man this is just a phenomenal bootleg. Manassas was a vastly under-rated country rock band consisting of most notably, the mighty Stephen Stills and Chris Hillman (ex-byrd, founding member of the burrito brothers) . This is their inaugural concert as the band Manassas according to the insert (which is not in the download, but can be found here). They run through some of the Manassas songs, some Stills songs, some CSNY songs and even a Byrds song, a Burritos song, and a Buffalo Springfield song. Download this if you like vintage country rock sounds, you will not be dissapointed. (and a thanks to Zen Archer @ The Clock That Went Backwards for this one)

Have had a few requests for this from folks over at the Chris Knight Forums, so thought I would get off my ass and post them.

As I said in the original post, this is a killer Chris Knight bootleg. For a number of reasons, 1. Chris Knight is from Kentucky, 2. it's almost a new years show, and 3. it's a full band show. So it's Chris playing on his home turf with and for his friends at a time of festivities.

If you haven't already, head over to chrisknight.net (not to be confused with christ knight dot net, which is something else entirely), and pre-order the excellent Trailer II, which is the follow up the The Trailer Tapes, and includes more early demos that are powerful as a hurricane in their starkness and honesty.

Now this is a killer bootleg. An almost New Years Eve show from 2006 with his band and damn are they in high gear. The sound on this one is excellent, and the performance is damned good too. This one is a must for all Chris Knight fans.

Well, I thought I would repost this seeing as Lucero has a new album on the way. Due out Oct. 6th, 1372 Overton Park is the name of the album, and it is Lucero's major label debut on Universal/Republic records. Pre-order the album now and get a 6 song sampler download of the album along with a plethora of other things depending on what you choose.

Early buzz of the album from the sampler is that this album moves the band into memphis soul and E-Street Band territories while still retaining that core sound Lucero fans know and love. Personally I like what I have heard, but hard core Lucero fans may not.

Heres a cool acoustic Lucero show from 2002. Recorded in a radio studio so you know the sound quality is good. It's a pretty interesting boot just because it's so similar to "The Attic Tapes", except there are newer songs on this one. Anyway, if you liked "The Attic Tapes" you will most likely dig this.

Thought I should throw this up to kick start another string of posts with the "outlaw" theme. George Jones, one of the original outlaws of country music, in his honky tonkin' prime way back in 1963. This is one of the best shows I've posted on here, an instant classic, studio quality. If you didn't grab it the first time, don't sleep on it this time! Original description says it all.

From The Archives: Sam Baker - Live At The Anchor Inn 12/4/07

Thought I would repost some Sam Baker in honor of his new album Cotton coming out Sept. 1st. Cotton will be the final disc of the Mercy Trilogy, and includes the excellent Mercy and Pretty World (which I'm sure some of my longtime readers are already familiar with). If you're not familiar with the mesmerizing and dare I say it life changing music of Sam Baker, then this will be an excellent intro.

If Mercy and Pretty World are any indication of what Cotton will sound like.....it will likely be one of the best albums of the year. You can pre-order Cotton through Amazon (currently not available through his webstore). If you do pre-order it through Amazon be sure to let songs:Illinois know about it so he can get back to blogging ;)

In case the other one wasn't enough for you, here's more Sam Baker. With more songs, more stories, same low levels. What that means is that while there is no disputing the awesomeness of this show (and it is indeed awesome), just like the other one you will need to crank the volume to fully appreciate it. I love that this one has more songs and more banter though. You can tell he is a lot more comfortable in front of an english speaking audience. I bet he's even more comfortable in front of a texas speaking audience :P. Love the fact that Psychic is on here too. Probably my favorite song off his new one.

Also am I the only one who thinks he looks like a cross between a beardless Willie Nelson and a muscleless Triple H?

From The Archives: Murder Ballads & Song's About Killin'

Just another request. This was the first comp I ever made for the site, way back in April & May of 2007.

Per request, here is a collection of murder ballads and other songs about killin'. I was surprised at how many I actually found in my collection, but I narrowed the scope down to more traditional sounding songs which meant I had to cut alot of good stuff like Steve Earle's "Billy Austin" & "The Devil's Right Hand", DBT's "Nine Bullets", "Decoration Day", & "Cottonseed", Old 97's "The Other Shoe", Johnny Cash's "Cocaine Blues" & "Sound of Laughter", Hendrix's "Hey Joe".....lots of good stuff, but I think what I came up with has a much more consistent flow.
I'm gonna give a brief description of each song Harry Smith style, so here goes:

1. Knoxville Girl by The Louvin Brothers
'Willy' (he seems to be the protagonist in alot of these songs) beats his 'Knoxville girl' to death with a stick then drags her by her hair and throws her into the Tennessee river.

2. Pretty Polly by Ralph Stanley & Patty Loveless
This is my favorite version of this song. 'Willy' lures 'Pretty Polly' into the woods and stabs her in the heart because she won't marry him, he then burys her in the grave he dug "the biggest part of last night".

3. Little Sadie by Doc Watson
You may know the more familiar "Cocaine Blues", this is the song it is derived from. Man kills 'Little Sadie' with a .44, he is then hunted down, arrested, and tried.

4. Little Glass of Wine by The Stanley Brothers
'Willy' wants to marry 'Molly', but she wants to wait a year. He then finds her dancing with another man and poisons her and himself.

5. Omie Wise by Doc Watson
True story of the murder of Naomi Wise by John Lewis in North Carolina circa 1808. John Lewis drowns Omie Wise whose body is found days later by 2 fisherman.

6. Pretty Daughter by The Bad Livers
A man who doesn't want his daughter to marry and leave him alone finds her in the woods with 'a boy from town' and kills him with a pick-axe.

7. Delia's Gone by Johnny Cash
An old traditional song that Johnny Cash brought to the mainstream. A man ties Delia to a chair in her parlor and shoots her for being low down and triflin'.

8. The Lawson Family Murder by Doc Watson
Probably the most twisted song in this collection. Charlie Lawson kills his wife and 6 children then shoots himself in the heart on a Christmas evening.

9. Caleb Meyer by Gillian Welch
My favorite song off this collection. Caleb Meyer attempts to rape Nellie Cane whose husband has went to town. He pins her down but she reaches the neck of the whiskey bottle he threw down and uses it to slit his throat and kill him.

10. Westfall by Okkervil River
This one is a contemporary murder ballad. Tells the story of a young man who goes over to his friend Colin Kincaid's house in Westfall where they meet up with 2 girls from Kenwood Christian and he ends up murdering one of them.

11. Country Death Song by Violent Femmes
A man kills his youngest daughter by throwing her in the well then hangs himself in the barn.

12. Polly Vaughn by The Dillards
A hunter accidentally shoots his true love mistaking her for a swan in the darkness.

13. Tom Dooley by Doc Watson
Probably the most famous murder ballad. Tom Dooley kills Laura Foster then burys her in a shallow grave on the hillside. Based on the real life murder of Laura Foster by Tom Dula.

14. John Hardy Was A Desperate Little Man by Anita Carter
This is an old Carter Family song. John Hardy kills a man on the West Virginia line, he is caught and hanged.

15. Henry Lee by Dick Justice
A woman kills Henry Lee with a pen knife and hides his body in a well because he loves another more than her.

16. Philadelphia Lawyer by Maddox Brothers & Rose
A cowboy kills the 'Philadelphia Lawyer' who lured his 'Hollywood Maid' away from him.

17. The Fate of Dewey Lee by The Carter Family
True story of the murder of Dewey Lee in Virginia circa 1931 who was killed by Joe Jenkins during a night of drinking for an unknown reason.

18. Otto Wood the Bandit by Doc Watson
Otto Wood gets in an argument with a pawnshop clerk and shoots him dead. He is then arrested, escapes, shot and arrested again, escapes and finally killed by two sheriffs in a southern town.

19. Stagger Lee by Taj Mahal
An old traditional blues song. Stagger Lee kills Billy during a game of craps.

20. Banks of the Ohio by Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs & Allison Krauss
An old traditional song, some people think this is a retelling of the same murder sung about in "Pretty Polly". A man proposes marriage to a young woman on the banks of the ohio river, when she refuses he drowns her.

21. Frankie and Johnny by Merle Haggard
An old Jimmie Rodgers tune, but I like this Haggard version off his Rodgers tribute album. Frankie shoots Johnny 3 times with a .44 when she finds him making love to Nelly Bly.

22. Turn It On, Turn It On, Turn It On by Tom T. Hall
Johnny goes on a shooting spree in 1944 killing all the people who called him a coward for not being able to enlist during WWII.

23. Cedartown Georgia by Waylon Jennings
A man kills his wife with a .22 when he catches her cheating on him.

24. Blue Rock Montana by Willie Nelson
A man kills his wife and the man she was cheating on him with in a tavern in Blue Rock Montana.
