Doug Sahm - At The Bijou Cafe Feb 21st 1973

So y'all know I'm a huge Doug Sahm fan, and this here is one of my favorite shows of his. It's from the Doug Sahm and Band era....which means it's heavier on the blues and lighter on the country. But hey it's Sir Doug....he couldn't sing Yankee Doodle without it sounding "tex-mex". I think this one makes a great addition to any other Doug Sahm you might have, he's truly one of the most underrated legends in rock and country. Most folks outside of Texas don't even know who he is...shame. Only disappointment on this is that he didn't play my favorite song of his "At The Crossroads" though he did make up for it with a scorching version of Hank's "Jambalaya". One thing to keep in mind while listening to this is that anytime you hear a fiddle or guitar....it's Doug Sahm wailing on it! (something I didn't realize until I watched the recent Live from Austin TX DVD).

In Doug Sahm related news, a tribute album titled Keep Your Soul was recently released on Vangaurd Records that includes tributes from Los Lobos, Alejandro Escovedo, Dave Alvin, and many others. And as I mentioned above, there is also a Live From Austin TX CD and DVD from 1975 just out on New West that is excellent.

Doug Sahm (with Augie Meyers & The Gourds) - S.D.Q. 98 (Live)

Incredibly little out of print album here. Recorded live about a year before Doug Sahm's, we find him with his trusty sidekick Augie Meyers & backed by none other than The Gourds back when they were fairly unknown. The Gourds are Sahm disciples, so they fit in perfect as his backing band. So much so that I wouldn't have known it was the Gourds had it not been on the cover. Uncle Tupelo fans might recognize one of the songs on here....that's right "Give Back The Key To My Heart" which Doug wrote & recorded in the mid 70's and sang backup on Uncle Tupelo's version.

Sir Douglas Quintet - Live From Austin TX 1981 (DVD Audio Rip)

Doug Sahm has worn many musical hats over the years. From his childhood as a country music prodigy who was offered a spot on the Grand Ole Opry (his mother declined), to the mid 60's first incarnation of the Sir Douglas Quintet (named such to cash in on the popularity of british invasion bands), to the psychedelia of Haight-Ashbury (where he lived in the late 60's), to country-rock with the reformed Sir Douglas Quintet in the late 60's & Early 70's, to none other than Bob Dylan playing on his first solo album in the early 70's, to Tex-Mex & Tejano in the 80's and early 90's with the Texas Tornados, to Alt-Country in the mid to late 90's when he sang with Uncle Tupelo on his song "Give Back The Key To My Heart" and cut a live album with The Gourds just before he died. Sahm has done alot in his career, and this set from Austin City Limits in 1981 is a good overview of most of that career. This is a DVD audio rip but the sound is great, as you would expect from an Austin City Limits show. Some of my favorite tracks include: their cover of ? & the Mysterions "96 Tears", the cover of Charley Pride's "(Is Anybody Going To) San Antone" which turns into the rocking "Texas Tornado" sometime in the middle, the cover of The 13th Floor Elevator's "You're Gonna Miss Me", my favorite Sahm song ever "At The Crossroads", and the closer....a rockin' version of "She's About A Mover" to finish it off.
