So I said check back in August...well it's August.....a few weeks in, but August no less. So where does that leave us music wise...well there are a few 08 albums I've been digging. Hayes Carll's newest is pretty damn good even if it's not as good as "Little Rock", The Steeldrivers have been scratching my bluegrass itch, Reckless Kelly's latest is classic Kelly, been digging The Felice Brothers like everyone else I'm sure, The Avett Brothers new EP ain't too bad, speaking of EP's....Jason Isbell put out a killer live one earlier this year, James McMurtry has a classic album out this year, and my favorite so far has been Justin Townes Earle's classic country throwback "The Good Life".
But really what I'm really looking forward too is all getting ready to come out. New Blue Mountain called Midnight in Mississippi is due out next week (and the album of re-recordings of their favorites Omnibus as well), a new Todd Snider album of protest songs called Peace Queer (can't wait for this one friends), a new Chris Knight album called Heart of Stone also out next week, a new Slaid Cleaves is due out later this year that I'm excited about because it's produced by Gurf Morlix. Speaking of Gurf, word is Ray Wylie Hubbard has a live album possibly coming out later this year that I'm dying to hear.
Then there is a new Scott Miller album also in the works for later this year. Scott is doing something I think is awesome, he's selling limited edition demos of said album (Appalachian Refugee) with custom unique artwork created by him to help finance the real studio album....pretty cool concept I thought....too bad I didn't find out about it till they were already sold out of the second pressing....here's to hoping for a third.
So as you can see, it's gonna be a great year for music, and I'm pretty excited about this second half.
oh, and it's good to be back guys, thanks for all the comments and support as always.

Have you heard Jamey Johnson? Wow, real Country music coming out of Nashville, can you believe it? Okay, via Alabama but still...
ReplyDeleteWaylon would be proud.
The player in my vehicle has been asking for the latest compilation CD. Thank you for coming back!
ReplyDeleteFor the Gurf Morlix fans out there: He'll be headlining at the FREEEEEE Elmwood Ave festival, in Buffalo, NY on the 23rd AND 24th of August.
We guarantee no snowstorms, for Saturday anyway.
Great to have you back. I have been clicking here a couple of times a week and was shocked when I just saw something new.
ReplyDeleteCan you repost that Chris Knight Lexington KY show from 12-30-06?
I have recently become obsessed with CK and would love to hear a live show with a full band.
Welcome back! Yea!
ReplyDeleteGood to have you back. The blog world has taken some serious losses lately so there's a big gap to fill.
ReplyDeleteCall off the bloodhounds! Welcome back!

Good to have ya back! I caught McMurtry in May right after Just Us Kids came out...what a show! Chris Knight is also playing this weekend in Bloomington IL for a CD release party of the new disc, and the Bottle Rockets have a 15th anniversary stop in Urbana-Champaign - neither of which I'll be able to make. But I'm trying to tuck a few bucks back for an Oct show by Southern Culture on the Skids.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back dear friend. Hope you had fine time!
ReplyDeleteGood to have you back! The Felice Brothers really is something - and there's a new Cardinals album in the pipeline (III/IV) this fall which is rumored to be some kind of monster, where they really let it rip. Oh, f-ck, I do need a new Ryan Adams kick-ass rock n' roll double-cd! Cardinals came to Sweden twice 2007, and I can't compare the shows they did here with anything else I've seen live. They basically tore the house down, twice. It's almost uncanny what a tight band they've become and how they sounded. This is gonna be so sweeeeeeet ...
