This one's very near and dear to my heart. I am a huge Tom T. Hall fan and when I found out a friend from work had NEVER heard of him I just had to make this. Lucky for you guys I decided to post it on here too. Tom T. is a master songwriter in the storyteller vein. Listening to one of his songs is like reading a good short story, I would go so far as to call Tom T. Hall the Mark Twain of country music.....he's that good. He's able to take you from laughter to teardrops with just one verse, for example just listen to "Mamma Bake A Pie (Daddy Kill A Chicken)"....about a soldier coming home from vietnam sans legs but at least "he'll save some money buying shoes". If this is your intro to Ol' T, well your in for a treat my friend. If your already familiar, well I tried to put in some of my favorite lesser known songs too.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_T._Hall

ATS13 - Tom T. Hall

Thanks so much for this. As a loifelong Spokanite, I remember well when "Spokane Motel Blues" came out in '73. A lot of the locals were up in arms, not realizing that it wasn't so much Spokane that he was complaining about, as much as being on the road in general. I guess I'm proud to say that then, at the tender age of 13, I indeed "got it". He's a true original. Thanks for the post, and Happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteShoulda proofread; "lifelong" is what I meant, of course.
ReplyDeleteFantastic. I have his greatest hits I & II, but there is a lot of good stuff missing from those that you've gathered here. Thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for this. I haven't checked which songs I have and which I don't but I'm sure there are some new ones for me.
ReplyDeleteEven though I have them, I'm glad to see you included "Pay no attention to Alice".
I knew the name Tom T. Hall but I "discovered" him through two great covers. "that's how I got to Memphis" by Buddy Miller and "I flew over our house last night" by Joe Henry. Then I really sought out his stuff and he became a hero of mine. Thanks again.
On this Thanksgiving I am giving some thanks for this blog. So thank you for always putting up great stuff. Happy Thanksgiving

Awesome! Takes me back to my childhood in upstate New York. As Abbie Hoffman once said, you can't get much further south than upstate New York...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments guys. Glad to see some Tom T. love around here. I've been playing this in my truck for weeks now....this makes a killer mix
ReplyDeleteWhat ... no "I like beer"?
ReplyDeleteAnyway thanks for a great post. Love it.
I haven't heard much Tom T. Hall in years. Decades maybe. But I remember his songs from when I was a kid, riding in my dad's pick-up. So thanks. Looking forward to listening.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. I've been a Tom T fan since I worked in country radio back in the 70s. One missing song, though. In this election year, "The Monkey That Became President" would be a great one to post!
ReplyDeleteI just have to tell you how much I enjoyed listening to this compilation today! I got that Storyteller, Poet,... box blind a couple of years ago and was blown away! To have your compilation on my ipod made my day today! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
MLP
P.S. How about Tom T. Hall in that beloved Random Record feature?
