Now, on to the subject of this post. Shake-It Records is also a record label, and luckily for me, their latest offering is a Drive-By Truckers 7" that is Vol. 2 in a tribute to Muscle Shoals session legend Eddie Hinton (Vol. 1 is by Cincinnati native Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs). Now, click that Eddie Hinton link there because there is some interesting info there. For instance the DBT song Sandwiches For The Road is based on the life of Eddie Hinton. As Dana Carvey would say in his Johnny Carson impression "I did not know that".
Now I haven't had a chance to listen to this yet, because my turntable is back home in Virginia, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on this. What I can give you though is a killer live version of side B: Everybody Needs Love

Both sides of this 45 are killer. Side one's "Where's Eddie" is late night soul at it's best w/ Shonna's sublime vocals. Side two's "Everbody Needs Love" sounds like it was cut at Muscle Shoals circa 1968, Patterson Hood unleashes his inner soul man w/ great results. Just can't get this record off my turntable.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mike
Man I am so loving Girls Who Smoke right now. Can't believe it's a vinyl only track though. Would kill for a studio version of it right now. There's something about this band that is so much more than any that has come before. Can't put my finger on it but it probably has something to do with reality. Keeping it real is so important. Gonna download these tunes though. Cant wait. See you on my blog dude!
ReplyDeletesearch the big to do on allmusic.com and you can hear 30 sec snippets of the tracks (sans girls who smoke)
ReplyDeleteif s store/label actaully went to the well to honor Eddie Hinton, and with this kind of talent (I hear there's more vols. to come) - then DAMN, a grateful nation should applaud them.
ReplyDeleteThe live track comes from this show: http://www.archive.org/details/dbt2009-08-08.akg460.flac16 and is available with permission of the band, there's plenty of DBT shows here. Some absolute killer shows.
ReplyDeleteThanks peter, I wasn't sure where that track came from.
