A Truer Easter

Who says songs about Jesus have to suck. Here's a good set of mostly straightforward gospel songs (mostly). First I want to talk about the cover image I used. Now these three crosses, exactly like those in the picture are all over this area....every road just about you will see them. They first started appearing around here in the mid to late 80's and there were many local legends about them. These legends state that a local millionaire had a near death experience during which he had a vision of God who told him he would spare his life if he spent the rest of it building these wooden crosses and placing them beside highways. Other parts of the legend state that some folks didn't take too kindly to these crosses being on their land or near their land or what have you and tried to tear them down. Supposedly one guys tractor suddenly caught on fire, one guy's boat engine died and he was stranded in a lake. One guy even supposedly had a heart attack whilst trying to remove the wooden crosses. There were also stories of lightning striking them but nothing happening, and them surviving forest fires, floods and hurricanes.
Now I don't know how true those last parts are, but a little research has confirmed that the man in question was indeed a succesful businessman from Craigsville, WV named Bernard Coffindaffer. He had a heart attack in 1982 which was when he recieved his holy vision and life's mission. Pretty interesting stuff I thought.

Here is an article about his death in the NY Times

There is even an organization that carried on his mission after his death called "Christian Crosses"

Here is some more history about Mr. Coffindaffer

I'm fairly new to Jim White.....and I didn't even think of putting Dylan on there (actually I toyed with I shall be released in a very early draft of this). But that's the beauty of MP3 mixes....you can add what you want right in there :)

First I did think, the link would not open at all - but once it did, it worked like a charm. no waiting, no hassle....

  10. Hi,
It was corrupted for me too.
Ron mentions the BS of JC: I once drove 300 miles to see them, that's how much I like them.
Thanks for all the great posts. I love the compilations.

  13. It's an 'EatLime problem. They arbitrarily cut off the feed at some point, giving you a partial file.

  16. Jim Lauderdale's, "I Met Jesus in a Bar", is one of the best Jesus-Songs I've heard in many a moon. Written and performed without a trace of irony. Wouldn't you've loved to heard a 70's era George Jones cover that song? It gives me chills just thinking about it.
Jim is such a major talent in the Country/Bluegrass world, I just can't understand why he isn't King of the Hill? Does he lack a certain hipster quality? He's a better singer/songwriter than about 95% of what's out there too.

  17. it aint working for me either, i got an error when i tried ot unzip. a bunch of these songs are new to me.

  18. Don't know guys. I've re-upped it at eatlime AND re-zipped and re-upped it at Megaupload.

Try the alt link (megaupload) if the eatlime isn't working. I think the problem was I posted the link before the upload was finished (which is supposed to be a feature of eatlime). that's my guess anyway....that or eatlime sucks :)

Vaughn, thanks man. I put a lot of thought into this one. Started out with cheesy Jesus songs but I just couldn't do it man...had to go for the good stuff. You're right about Lauderdale too. Can't beleive he is unknown to the casual country music fan, this guy should have montgomery gentry shining his boots and brad paisley opening for him.

and how many grammy's has he won....a shit load I'm sure. I'm pretty sure he's happy just where he is....so much talent though

  19. I used the megaupload link and it worked fine. Thanks "truersound". This was just exactly perfect listening for today.

  20. MegaUpload is fine; it's an EatLime problem. Thanks for the repost, beyond your usual outstanding effort.

  21. Another for your consideration, "Jesus In New Orleans" from Over The Rhine's Ohio album.

But when I least expect it
Here and there I see my savior’s face
    He’s still my favorite loser
Falling for the entire human race
