Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - The Revival Demos

This is a cool little disc of what the Gillian Welch masterpiece album Revival sounded like at one time. To me this sounds like they were channeling alot more Gram than Maybelle, and it makes for an interesting comparison. Some of the songs sound pretty good, but some of them just don't work well at all. I'm glad they took the minimalist approach to the final album.....either way these are great songs and it's really hard to mess them up. Just compared to the released album they don't compare.....at least not to my ears.

  1. This is incredible! I've been hoping for some new music from GW/DR--this will do for now.

    Thank you.

  3. This is indeed a suburb bootleg. I still don't really understand why Welch/Rawlings had to re-record some of the songs, as this is already suburb. But then again... we have it.... and as they are not making haste with new work, this is the closest we can have now.

  4. yeh, I didn't say it wasn't good....just doesn't compare to the released version. I'm probably just too used to the released album.

some of this reminds me of what they did on Ryan Adam's Heartbreaker album....as far as the arrangements and such

  5. When I first heard this a while ago I thought it wasn't as good as the finished album but now I don't know. I think I just prefer the finished album as it's tone much darker than these demos, somehow sounds much truer to the emotional tone of the songs.

  7. Thanks, mate. I've only recently discovered Gillian Welch's and wonder how I lived without it. Makes me scared to realise how much other wonderful music there is out there beyond the boundaries of mainstream radio.
