Some More Live Shows (Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Sean Reefer, Hank III)

Well, I haven't had a chance to up anything lately so to tide you over here's a few more live shows from Archive.org. These are some hardcore honkytonk sounds right here (well at least 'til you get to Hank III's second set).

Dale Watson tearin' it up at Murphy's in North Carolina. Some of my favorite tracks off this are "Ain't A Cow In Texas", "Truckin' Queen", the classic "That's Country My Ass", and his take on "Fox on the Run"......there's a lot of great truckin' songs on this set too. If you don't know who Dale Watson is, he sounds kinda like Junior Brown.....but a lot rowdier and more whiskey.....You know that scene in blues brothers where they play at the honky tonk with the chicken wire and the beer bottles flyin'.......Dale Watson would have been the house band for that place.

Wayne Hancock - At The Continental Club Sept. 20, 2003

This is a great set from Wayne "The Train". Give it a listen to find out how he got that nickname. This is pure honky tonk music.....bass fiddle and all. This is the guy Hank III got his country act from. If you like Hank Williams, you will like Wayne Hancock.

Sean Reefer & The Resin Valley Boys - At The Continental Club April 24, 2004

Have you ever wondered what Hank Williams would have sounded like if he sang about smokin' dope instead of drinkin'.......well now you know. If you like Hank III (the country version) and Wayne Hancock....there's a pretty good chance you'll like this. This also kind of reminds me of BR5-49, so if you like them check this out. They do some pretty mean Hank covers too.

Hank III - At The Lincoln Theatre April 8, 2006

This was the last show of his tour last year and III goes all out on this one.......he sounds ROUGH on this one boys.....I mean I ain't ever heard him sound like this. His voice is on the verge of being shot....either from all the touring, 5 shots or rot-gut whiskey, or he just took a monster bong hit of the sticky icky......probably all three. Anyway this is a great set, probably my favorite I have heard from him, and I have heard alot......really raw.....like June says to Johnny in Walk the Line......"Sharp like a razor, steady like a train".
The first set of this is where he shines....I'm not too big on his hellbilly and assjack stuff......but the country stuff is so good I'm willin' to overlook it.
Hank III sounds just like how you would expect the bastard grandson of Hank Williams to sound.

Some Live Shows (Hayes Carll, DBT, Corb Lund)

Here's a few of my favorite live shows over at Archive.org

Hayes Carll - At the Continental Club Jan. 21, 2006

If you haven't heard Hayes Carll, then you owe it to yourself to check this guy out. Hands down one of the best singer-songwriters I have heard in years. In the vein of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Ray Wylie Hubbard, & Buddy Miller. The fact that this guy is largely unknown outside of Texas boggles my mind. This guy is the future of real music.

Drive-By Truckers - At Smith's Old Bar May 1, 2004
A nice little acoustic set from the truckers from 2004 featuring then new songs from "Decoration Day"

Corb Lund - At Cheatham Street Wharehouse Nov. 30, 2006
Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans hail from Alberta Canada and are putting out some of the best country you can get now adays. This show was a double bill with Hayes Carll (his performance is also available on archive) and just like him it's a damn shame more people don't know about him. Some of my favorite cuts from this show: Roughest Neck Around, Hurtin' Albertan, and Time to Switch to Whiskey.

Johnny Cash - Louisiana Hayride Recordings (1955-1962)

Continuing on with our classic country weekend, and in defiance of some of the events that unfolded last night.....I present to you some early Johnny Cash radio performances.

Recorded on the Louisiana Hayride radio show between the years of 1955 thru 1962, these recordings capture John R. at his earliest and most raw. Standout tracks include a rare performance of "It Ain't Me Babe" with June Carter (with some great cutting up at the beginning), a rare perfomance of "Luther Played the Boogie" and well pretty much all of them......and hearing Johnny Cash talk about donuts is a novelty in and of itself.
  1. Ballad of a Teenage Queen
  2. Big River
  3. Busted
  4. Five Feet High and Rising
  5. Donut Commercial/Give My Love To Rose
  6. Goodbye Little Darlin'
  7. I Guess Things Happen That Way
  8. Hey Porter
  9. I Walk The Line
  10. It Ain't Me Babe (with June Carter)
  11. Luther Played The Boogie
  12. Orange Blossom Special
  13. The Rebel, Johnny Yuma
  14. Rock Island Line
  15. So Doggone Lonesome

There is a newer version of this that was released a few years ago and is a little more comprehensive but it is also out of print. Here's to hoping that a definitive version of these recordings make their way out of the Johnny Cash archives.

On Second Thought...

You know what, I thought about it and I'm not giving up that easy. So I think I'm just gonna concentrate on mainly rare & out of print stuff for a while. However if anyone wants some of the links below restored just let me know.

Stay Tuned...

OK, FUCK THIS!

Looks like I got caught in the middle of some weird internet blogger feud that frankly I could give 2 shits about. I don't think I will be restoring my links cause these Hanszun guys freak me out. Apparently he has nothing better to do than harrass other blogs and get their links deleted cause only he is allowed to have a music blog. That is what I gathered anyway from this link:
http://hanszun.tripod.com/index.html

It was fun while it lasted guys, and thanks for the kind comments.

maybe I'll see some of you guys around, until then........Keep on Twangin'

Merle Haggard - Fightin' Side of Me (Live 1970)

In honor of one of our fallen compadres, it's a Klassic Kuntry® weekend here at A Truer Sound. So without further delay, I present to you what I consider to be The Hag's greatest live album.

Recorded in Philidelphia, this album is a great companion piece to the live in Muskogee album from the previous year in much the same way that Johnny Cash's "Folsom" & "San Quentin" albums are. Standout tracks include his typical hits but specifically the song "Harold's Super Service" (only available on this album) and the impersonations medley which includes impersonations of Marty Robbins, Hank Snow, Buck Owens, & Johnny Cash. Also worth mentioning is the frantic version of "Fightin' Side of Me" which has alway been my favorite version.

Gob Iron - Death Songs For The Living

I've been on a son volt/Jay Farrar kick here lately (thanks to the new son volt album), so I present you Jay's side project from last year with Anders Parker......Gob Iron.

This album is as close to uncle tupelo that you can get with out hopping in a time machine and going back to 1991. Very reminiscent of UT's "March 16-20" album. These are mostly covers and re-interpratations of old folk songs. Standout tracks include Farrar's "Death's Black Train", "Hard Times", "Nicotine Blues", & Parkers excellent "Hills of Mexico". Also included is a another Carter Family cover like only Jay can do......."East Virginia Blues". So if you like acoustic Uncle Tupelo.......you will surely dig this...and if you like son volt, the last track "Buzz and Grind" is classic son volt material.

Drive By Truckers - A Blessing in Disguise (Bonus Disc from Blessing and a Curse)

One more treat for your hearin' ears......The bonus disc from DBT's "A Blessing and a Curse"

Only a limited amount of these were handed out at certain stores for pre-orders of "Blessing and a Curse". Includes 4 tracks, 2 unreleased and 2 that are from the "Live at the 40 Watt DVD"

  • 1. When The Well Runs Dry
  • 2. Like A Rolling Stone
  • 3. Careless (Live)
  • 4. Marry Me (Live)

Now I am a huge DBT fan (just so you know) and the first track off this is definitely the standout track, another solid Isbel song. Their take on Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" is also interesting because we finally get to hear Shonna sing!

Chris Knight - The Trailer Tapes

Ok, another treat for you guys.....Chris Knight - The Trailer Tapes

Due to be released in April this is a collection of songs Chris recorded in 1996 before he ever released an official album. These tracks are bare.....just him and a guitar. If you've never heard of Chris Knight he is an excellent singer-songwriter in the vein of Steve Earle. Standout tracks on this album include a killer version of "House and 40 Acres", "Spike Driving Blues" and an early version of his classic "If I Were You"

So that's how it's gonna be huh.....

Apparently somebody must really hate country blogs cause the links on all of them are going down faster than a one-legged hooker.

Do not despair though...I will try my best to restore the links.
