Dude.... you are a god. Thank you so much for this post! Keep up the excellent work! Your blog rocks. A daily visit for me.
ReplyDeleteSo? Some folks have "a problem" with SE's post 9/11 work? Hhmm? Well, "The Revolution Starts Now" is easily one of the top 3-4 albums he has ever made. He is the ONLY man alive that might inherit the Kristopherson mantle of pure guts and the willingness to stand and be counted.
ReplyDeleteTake another listen to "Home to Houston" ...that's the real stuff.
Fuck the FCC.
....oh and yeah, massively great post!
Dude, You're scaring me - I was just gettin' ready to start tryin' to track this down...
ReplyDeleteWhen boom - here it is!
Thanks so much!
P.S. I'm gonna start thinkin' about that new car I am wantin'...
thanks again for all this great music. Your blog is one of the very best!
ReplyDeletethanks for the great post. btw, did you know that sendspace won't accept links from sharebee? at least that's the message i got. ah, well pooh on them
ReplyDeleteThanks, man! 'preciate it.
ReplyDeleteHis post 9/11 stuff can best be described as "necessary, but disposable". What I miss now, that is so well represented here on these tracks, is the swagger and humor of a man living outside of society.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this, much of it I have, but a bunch of it I don't. It's nice to have it all in one place.
Your zeitgeist is working well, I've been listening to a lot of Steve lately and I had the treat of watching TALADEGA NIGHTS the other night and it's loaded with his songs.
Just incredibly great stuff. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteBy sheer definition something CAN NOT be ""necessary, but disposable".
ReplyDeleteAnd the mere fact that people see his work in "pre & post 9/11" terms is a dead give away to their laziness of thought.
Incredible. Thanks for all the time and effort that went into this treasure.
ReplyDeleteThanks much for this great box set!! I really appreciate that you made it available!!
ReplyDeleteThanks guys for the kind words, when I come across something like this I just got to share. I wish I know who the original compiler(s) were so I could thank them for putting together this awesome collection.
ReplyDeleteas for the post/pre 9/11 argument....I like all steve earle's stuff. as a matter of fact one of my fave albums of his is "just an american boy" (and the accompanying documentary) which came out (GASP!) post 9/11.
You guys who lost faith in him after all the political stuff should check it out (the doc. and the album), it will renew your faith.
Great think about this series of tubes we call the internets is every now and then you find a site like this. Thanks for this!
ReplyDeleteAnd by think I mean thing. PoW!
ReplyDeleteI've never lost faith in Steve Earle and I saw "Just An American Boy" (frankly, I was a little bored by it and much prefer other versions of his songs). Steve is a great man, but overly politicized music has a short shelf life. What I mean is, five years from now are you going to be listening to "THE REVOLUTION STARTS...NOW" or "I FEEL ALRIGHT"?
ReplyDeleteSteve is a true patriot and I'm thankful he raises his voice for us but in the long run, when it comes to MUSIC I like it much better when he writes about "Us" and not "Them".
((((What I mean is, five years from now are you going to be listening to "THE REVOLUTION STARTS...NOW" or "I FEEL ALRIGHT"?)))))
ReplyDelete"Masters of War" - 1963.
But to answer your question...I'm gonna be playing them both.
"Master of War" is a classic to be sure; "Condi, Condi, Condi" is not. And I'll stand on Steve Earle's coffee table with my flip-flops on and say that.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Mr. Dylan moved away from overt political writing (for the most part) right after be penned that timeless (and not topical) gem.
Grabbing subject matter from the pages of TIME magazine for songwriting ideas (not that there's anything wrong with that, just ask Neil Young) will render songs timely not timeless.
"Condi, Condi, Condi" is well, a not reaching for the stars, lets say. But nor does that lone song song define that brilliant record. Whether Dylan "moved away" from "overtly" political writing "for the most part" post-63 is quite a stretch. Putting a definitive "time stamp" on a song is a very hard tight rope to walk. But it can be said that Earle is one of the very few who at least gets out there on the line. That's where the great stuff always comes from. 4 dead in ohio...
ReplyDelete-enjoy the debate, great stuff!
JUst discovered your site. Fantastic. Sorry to be boring, but I seem to have trouble getting anything from the sharebee links. Do I have to join it? Download it? can anyone help? I use a Mac. Thanks
ReplyDeleteReally cool mix. Thanks for taking the time to spread these pearls!
ReplyDeleteHear Rock City pointed me to this. Huge Earle fan...this has made my summer!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your efforts..nice work
I love this freakin' blog!!!
ReplyDeleteIs there ANY chance of re-upping this?
