Speaking of Drive By Truckers

As some of you may know, I've been spending the week in Cincinnati. One of the things I always try to do when I hit a new city is check out the local record stores. Thanks to some help from a few locals, I got some great tips for where the good record finds are in Cincinnati. Places like Everybody's Records & Mole's Records which is a sleepy little store right off UC campus that any vinyl hunter could easily spend a week in if unchecked (crates from floor to ceiling completely unsorted). One of the record stores I was told I HAD to go to was Shake-It Records. Shake-It from what I gather is somewhat of an institution in Cincinnati, and rightly so as it's one of the most eclectic, friendly, and organized record stores I've been to.

Now, on to the subject of this post. Shake-It Records is also a record label, and luckily for me, their latest offering is a Drive-By Truckers 7" that is Vol. 2 in a tribute to Muscle Shoals session legend Eddie Hinton (Vol. 1 is by Cincinnati native Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs). Now, click that Eddie Hinton link there because there is some interesting info there. For instance the DBT song Sandwiches  For The Road is based on the life of Eddie Hinton. As Dana Carvey would say in his Johnny Carson impression "I did not know that".

Now I haven't had a chance to listen to this yet, because my turntable is back home in Virginia, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on this. What I can give you though is a killer live version of side B: Everybody Needs Love

Drive By Truckers - After The Scene Dies (vid), and news

Here's a great vid of one of the new songs from The Big To-Do, due out March 16th. The band starts their Big To-Do tour tomorrow, and they are also offering a free download of the first single, a song called This Fucking Job. In even more DBT news, they will be screening the first ever DBT documentary entitled The Secret To A Happy Ending in Feb. I can't wait to see that!

News Roundup: new DBT, new Reckless Kelly, and new Ray Wylie Hubbard!

How bout a quick news blurb? Just wanted to tell you guys about 3 albums I'm excited about next year.

  • Got official word yesterday that The Drive By Truckers' new album, titled "The Big To-Do", will be out March 16th on ATO records, their new record label. What does Patterson have to say about it? “It’s very much a rock album, very melodic and more rocking than anything we’ve done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera.” Read more here
  • Speaking of DBT, they have just recorded a tribute to Muscle Shoals session man Eddie Hinton on 7" vinyl for Shake-It records that features two Eddie Hinton songs. More info here
  • Reckless Kelly have a new album due out Feb. 9th called "Somewhere in Time". The album is slated to feature "hardcore cowboy songs" of Idaho music legend Pinto Bennett. More info (and streaming music) here, or watch the below video

  • Now my favorite piece of news, Ray Wylie Hubbard has a new album coming out Jan. 12th. The much anticipated album is called "A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkment (Hint: There Is No C) (a line taken from one of the songs on the album) and is now available for pre-order (autographed). More info here

Mike Cooley - Live at The 40 Watt (2/25/2005)

So, here we have the third main songwriter of the Drive By Truckers, and the only one who doesn't have any kind of solo album. Listening to this makes you wonder why. Here Cooley is alone with his acoustic guitar playing whatever the crowd wants to hear. He runs through many Truckers' favorites, old and new, and even a few unreleased tracks. A couple of the songs like "Little Pony and The Great Big Horse" and an alternate version of "Uncle Frank" can be heard on the excellent new odds and ends album The Fine Print (have I said that enough across these last three posts?). This is a real treasure, and getting almost all of Cooley's songs together only cements the fact that he is an amazing songwriter and singer. My favorite tracks on here are of course the new ones I had never heard before, the drunk driving ballad "Three On The Tree", "Pulaski Tennessee", and my favorite unreleased one "Weakest Man". Also of interest is an early version of "Bob". The show ends with a killer one-two-three acoustic punch of "Marry Me", "Where The Devil Don't Stay" and "Daddy's Cup". Sound is a solid A-, not to be missed.

And a bonus for you Cooley fans, here is an interesting and insightful interview (because we rarely get to hear from the man) from when his song was featured in Rock Band. Check out this interesting quote: "I make more money off t-shirts. If you rip it, burn it, give it to somebody, and they come to a show and buy a ticket and a t-shirt, I profit more that way anyway, and then I've got a fan. Records are promotional items these days anyway"

Patterson Hood - Onward Out The Window (Caledonia Lounge 11/4/2009)

Who likes theme posts? Do you like theme posts? Well lucky for you, you're in the middle of a string of them. This one is simply incredible! Perfect fucking sound, great stories, and very interesting setlist. In fact, this is the first of 3 weekly shows hood is currently performing at The Caledonia Lounge in Athens, GA. This one he billed as "Onward Out The Window (new and used songs stripped down to piano and guitar)", and that's exactly what you get. Stripped down familiar songs, and a few new ones. This is really a can't miss for Patterson fans and Drive-By Truckers fans. Some amazing renditions on here, perfectly augmented by simply an acoustic guitar and piano/organ while Patterson embellishes each song with stories and anecdotes he has become famous for. A really intimate show.

Patterson currently has a new album out called Murding Oscar, and this wednesday at The Caledonia he will be performing his 3rd show, the "rock show" with his backing band The Belvederes. If you are in the area I would make sure not to miss it.

Also don't forget about the new DBT odds & ends album The Fine Print

An Acoustic Evening With Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit (8/4/2009)

By request here, a Jason Isbell show from this past august. This is all acoustic, and it's damn good. Sound is a B+ because there is some low level chatter throughout, but really nothing to make this unlistenable. Performance is a solid A+. A Very good evening of acoustic music from Mr. Isbell and his 400 Unit. Includes extended cuts of Danko/Manuel, Goddamn Lonely Love (an amazingly soulful version I might add...a must hear), Decoration Day and Thank God For The TVA (which was recently released on the killer DBT odd's & ends album The Fine Print). Now that was all said to lure you DBT fans in who might be on the fence about Isbell's solo career. I will say this, his latest self titled album is one of the finest albums I've heard this year. It's definitely a slow grower.....but it sticks with you and reveals an album that will be listened to for many years to come.

McMurtry winner, Ray Wylie Hubbard movie, Wrinkle Neck Mules, new Scott Miller track, Carolyn Mark & NQ Arbuckle, etc

  • jridgeway was the winner of the McMurtry CD/DVD. Thanks all for commenting and entering. Some great lyrics posted, some I have overlooked and will now be listening to more closely

  • Wrinkle Neck Mules latest album Let The Lead Fly was pushed back to to October 20th release date. That's next Tuesday. It says in that story that it's a great album for fall driving through the mountains.....true statement, as I have come to the same conclusion.

  • Scott Miller has a new track that will be available for download on his site and help fund his upcoming album. I don't have the specifics cause dammit I lost the email. In the meantime, enjoy some of the killer vids he has made on his site.

  • Just wanted to give a heads up for the Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle album Let's Just Stay Here which comes out tomorrow. Carolyn is half of canadian supergroup The Corn Sisters (with Neko Case), and as you know, NQ Arbuckle made one of my favorite albums of 2008. The album also features an unexpected cameo from fellow canadian Corb Lund.

Johnny Cash Tribute - Austin City Limits Festival 9-20-03

Well like I said in my guest post over at High Noon Saloon, this year seems to be the year for tribute and cover albums.....so what better time to post this Johnny Cash Tribute from just a week after his death back in 2003 (damn, has it been that long :( ). I've actually been sitting on this one for a while, but I had no information on it, and it was one long track. I'm not even sure where or when I got it, but it seems to me like I've had it since about late 2003 sometime. After some detective work I was finally able to figure out the venue, then the correct artists, even found a nice little review of the show. It's not the best recording, but I think it's significant enough to matter. I mean where else are you going to get a version of Mike Cooley singing "Give My Love To Rose" (my personal highlight of this set), or DBT and Old 97's on the same show for that matter?

Drive By Truckers - The Dirt Underneath Iowa 10-18-07

Killer little DBT boot here from there just wrapped up (I think) Dirt Underneath tour. Now if you don't know, the Dirt Underneath tour was a laid back tour (hence the sit down performances) and featured Soul Session legend Spooner Oldham. There are a few new songs on here worth checking out too, not to mention some seldom heard oldies.....like my favorites "panties in your purse" and "tails facing up". Can't wait for the new album to come out. It's called "Brighter Than Creation's Dark" and it's due to be released January 22nd of '08.

Drive-By Truckers - Alabama Ass Whoopin'

By Request, the out of print, ass-kickin', early DBT live album "Alabama Ass Whoopin'". This is worth having only for the intro to 18 Wheels of Love. The other stuff is good too, but that intro is legendary.....epic....one for the ages.

I got a request earlier for this, so here it is. Hope you guys enjoy.

Drive-By Truckers - KEXP Seattle 7-3-07

This is a fantastic recording from a little over a week ago of the Drive-By Truckers on KEXP in Seattle, Washington playing new songs (and one old one) and talking about the forthcoming album. They were in town to play Willie's 4th of July picnic at The Gorge in Seattle. This is a really good recording, and fans will want to snatch this up. Really diggin' the new songs on here.
BTW, former trucker Jason Isbell's solo album was released this week - Available Here

A Truer Sampler 04 - Drive By Truckers

Now this one was incredibly hard to whittle down, they have so many good songs. And I don't want to hear any crap about the artwork either....I tried and tried and that's the best I could come up with...I just went for the cheese factor like their early album covers :P......besides, you can print it out and color it if you want. So I talk about DBT alot on here, they are one of my absolute favorite bands, they are actually THE band that restored my faith in new music. See I had kind of lost faith in new music sometime around '98/'99. I just couldn't find anything that excited me, that is until I discovered the mighty Drive-By Truckers.
.
But before I get into that let me talk about the local record shop (RIP) I used to frequent. This is the same shop I would go buy all the SCOTS & Old 97's albums and they had a killer section for this type of music that didn't have a label on it because that was before anyone had settled on a proper name. Well anyway, this section on the CD rack was only about 4 rows of CD's but it was all killer stuff, and sometimes I would just buy something from there to see what it sounded like. Well one of the CD's they had in there that I must have picked up a gazilion times to look at but for some reason never bought was a CD called "Gangstabilly" by a group called "Drive-By Truckers". Now I never bought it cause I thought it would be some cheesy cheesy music....novelty music. This is one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made concerning a music purchase. It wasn't until years later that I heard about this strange band called Drive-By Truckers again....I had read a few reviews in a couple magazines of their album "Southern Rock Opera" which was highly spoken of. So I downloaded a few tracks (this was in Napster's heyday) and was just blown away by songs like "Zip City" and "Ronnie and Neil". I went out and bought "Southern Rock Opera" the next day. Now this was right before "Decoration Day" came out. When it did come out, I ran out and bought that too.....the day it was released.....which I have done with every one of their albums since. They were the first band I was genuinly excited about in years.....I felt like I was a young'n again just discovering music.....and they opened the door for me to dig deeper into new music and I started discovering all kinds of stuff I was not even aware was out there. And I'm still excited about music now, their's in particular....and for that I would like to thank them.
.
I had to cut alot of good songs from this, some of my faves too like: Nine Bullets, Ronnie and Neil, One of These Days, Company I Keep, Sounds Better In A Song, Sinkhole, Where The Devil Don't Stay, Cottenseed, Danko/Manual, Goddamn Lonely Love.....just too many to list that I had to cut, I could have easily made this a double discer.....but I would encerouge each and everyone of you, if you don't already own them to go out and get everyone of their albums. If you only got the bread for a couple albums, then definitely at least get "Decoration Day" and "The Dirty South". Those two are essential. After that get the DVD "Live at the 40 Watt", then "Southern Rock Opera", "Pizza Deliverance", "Gangstabilly", the amazing early live album "Alabam Ass Whoopin" & Patterson Hood's solo album "Killers & Stars"....then if you like all that get "Blessing and a Curse".

Drive-By Truckers - Rare Tracks

OK, so we'll get to the sampler's shortly. First I wanted to post this, it's a little "EP" I worked up of some rare DBT tracks. Now half of these are from the "Blessing and a Curse" bonus disc....which I've already posted, but I felt they deserved to be on here. The real gems of course (unless you haven't heard the bonus disc either) are the cover of Skynyrd's "Every Mother's Son" and the Dirty South outtake "Great Car Dealer War". This actually makes a nice little cohesive EP and has satisfied me as something new to listen to until a new DBT album comes out (they are in the studio RIGHT NOW!)

Some other DBT news: They are currently doing their "Dirt Underneath Tour" where they are road testing their new songs. I also read there is some kind of documentary coming out possibly sometime this year.....HOLY SHIT, I cannot wait for that.

  1. Outfit - from "Austin City Limits Music Festival: 2003 Collection"

  2. Every Mother's Son - from "Under The Influence: A Jam Band Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd"

  3. Great Car Dealer War - Outake from "The Dirty South", from "Comes With A Smile Vol. 16" (Comes With A Smile is a British magazine)

  4. When The Well Runs Dry - from "Blessing and a Curse" Bonus Disc

  5. Like A Rolling Stone - from "Blessing and a Curse" Bonus Disc

  6. Careless (Live) - from "Blessing and a Curse" Bonus Disc

  7. Marry Me (Live) - from "Blessing and a Curse" Bonus Disc

Adam's House Cat - Town Burned Down (Out of Print Pre-DBT album)

Adam's House Cat was Patterson Hood's and Mike Cooley's first band together, pre-DBT circa 1985-1991. This album as yet still unreleased was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1990. It features early versions of "Lookout Mountain" & "Nine Bullets" and a slew of other kickass songs. One of my favorites off this is "Runaway Train". It nice to hear some early work of Patterson & Cooley....and this album is a nice glimpse of the genius work that was to come.

Drive-By Truckers - Southern Rock Opera Live - Jan. 18 - 19, 2002

This is a DBT live show from 2002 where they run through all the songs off of their epic Southern Rock Opera album (and a couple that aren't). The first night is dedicated to Act I, and the second night is dedicated to Act II. Recorded at the Zephyr Club in Salt Lake City Utah, at this time DBT were still a fairly unknown band and were just starting to get critical aclaim. It's nice to have live versions of all the songs off SRO, and a couple of the older songs like Buttholeville & One of These Days fit in nicely. It makes me wonder if these songs were supposed to be part of the overall "rock opera".....I say yes, just because they fit in so good. So sit back, relax, and take a trip back to when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Re-post: DBT - Live Acoustic & Otherwise

These are some great intimate recordings of one of my favorite bands, The Drive-By Truckers. The first disc is comprised of 2 great acoustic sets, the first is an in-store acoustic at Waterloo Records in Austin, Texas on August 22, 2003 where they run through some songs off Decoration Day. The other is at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta, Georgia on May 1, 2004 where the play some old familiars off Decoration Day and some then new songs off The Dirty South. To finish up the first disc we have a great performance of Jason singing Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927 at Manchester Academy in Manchester, England. This was recorded shortly after Hurricane Katrina and the band played this song in tribute.

The second disc starts off with an absolutely killer in-studio performance at KBCO 97.3FM in Boulder, Colorado from August 16, 2004 which is comprised of an interview and 2 songs from The Dirty South. Next up we have the real prize here, a set of tunes recorded at what sounds like a house party at Mike Cooley's house on December 29, 2003. This is a real laid back performance and you gotta love all the chatter, singin' along and bottles clangin'. That would have been one hell of a party to have been to, and thankfully someone had the foresight to record it.
