Truesounds - Sept. '08

Another month, another comp....This one has some damn fine songs on it. Lot's of new releases and a couple old goodies. Featured on here are a lot of newly released tracks; from Mudcrutch (AKA Tom Petty's 35th class reunion), Blue Mountain (the killer title track to their latest), Old Crow (they found a new drug to sing about), Reckless Kelley (stealing their lyrics from Jeremiah Wright :P), Chris Knight (his new album is classic Chris Knight), Bruce Robison (sounding just like Bruce Robison), a bizarre one from Fred Eaglesmith, new band Band of Heathens (no it's not the Black Crowes), a track from the new Kasey Chambers duet album with Shane Nicholson, and so one and such. I got lazy this month and just took a screen shot of the track list. Enjoy

Truesounds - Summer '08

What would a comeback be without a music post? So here's a sampler to (hopefully) make up for the 3 months of downtime.

1 A Ghost To Most - Drive By Truckers
Best song off the DBT's latest?.....you decide

2 Tiger Tom Dixon's Blues - Rod Picott
A recent discovery for me via Slaid Cleaves. Song is off his 2001 album of the same name

3 Lowlight - Wrinkle Neck Mules (ft.Will Oldham)
Still love the mules my friends, this song has been bouncing around my brain for a while now....I didn't even realize it was Will Oldham singing on this one till I got a hard copy of the album.....great, great song here....further solidifying my love for the mules. Off "Pull The Brake" from 2006.

4 She's Gone - Langhorne Slim
Frantic folk? This ones got so much energy when you play it in your car your fuel economy goes up (wow that was a bad joke....). Off his new self titled label debut album.

5 Into the mystic - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Most people aren't aware that Jason Isbell and his band The 400 Unit recently put out a live EP called "Live at the Twist and Shout". Well he did, and it's good....this song is off it

6 I've Got A Plan - Scott Miller & The Commonwealth
Man I just love this song....the way he sings it...that one errant chord after he says "the cod and the bean"....this song is one of his best in my opinion. Off 2003's Upside Downside

7 No One Told Me - Kane Welch Kaplin
Just a groovin' little song off their self titled album from last year.

8 Defy The Moon - Drag The River
Another new discovery for me. These guys ain't half bad, and this is off their latest 2008 album "You Can't Live This Way"

9 Frankie's Gun! - The Felice Brothers
Geez, is there a buzz about this band or what?....This is probably their most popular song, but it's also my favorite so I just threw it on here. Off their self-titled 2008 album

10 Queenie 's Song - Guy Clark
My God I love this song, It's been popping in my head here recently as there is a local pizza joint called "Queens" that I drive by daily, so I threw it on here. Off his 2002 album "The Dark".

The Canadian Lucinda? Maybe. Off her newest "Asking for Flowers"...which is a pretty damned fine album

15 Blue Side of the Mountain - Steeldrivers

16 Fireline Road - James McMurtry
Our friend Mr. McMurtry has another damn fine album out this year called "Just Us Kids". It's good.

Pretty good love song and duet with his wife off last years much lauded "Washington Square Serenade".

What's this, Will Oldham has a new album out too....yes, and it's one of his best in my opinion. Some great, great tunes on there

19 Amsterdam - Jon Dee Graham
Word is Jon Dee Graham recently had a bad accident and is struggling with his medical bills. If you like this song, it's off his killer Live album from last year "Swept Away"

20 Things Ain't Like They Used to Be - The Black Keys
Probably stretching the boundaries I have set for this site a little, but hell I'm willing to bet more than a few of you are Black Keys fans. To my ears, this is the song of the year. I just can't get enough of it. Off their stylisticaly departed new album "Attack and Release"

Truesounds Aug. '07

Allright folks, this will most likely be my final post for a few weeks at least. The last "Truesounds" comp. was a success, so I decided to make it a monthly thing. I usually burn (almost) monthly mixes for myself anyway, so it works out pretty good.

01-Hayes Carll-Beyond The Blues (this is off this year's Peter Case Tribute album, which has a shit-ton of awesome people on it like Todd Snider, Buckner, Joe Ely, McMurtry, Prine....etc . I'm a big Hayes fan so I love anything new I can get from him)
02-Scott H. Biram-Lost Case Of Being Found (the sensational one-man-band himself, this is off his album from last year "Graveyard Shift")
03-David Childers and The Modern Don Juans-Little Summertime Girl (these guys are a recent discovery for me, and I'm really diggin' them. This song is off their new album "Burning In Hell"
04-Wrinkle Neck Mules-Cadillac Limousine (another recent discovery, this song is off of this year's "Wicks Have Met")
05-Johnny Cash-God's Gonna Cut You Down (it's Johnny Cash.....what more do I need to say. Off of last year's posthumously released "American V")
06-King Wilkie-Wrecking Ball (yet another recend discovery....a great little bluegrass band. This is off their most recent, 2007's "Low Country Suite")
07-Ollabelle-High On A Mountain (soul-country-gospel.....this band features Levon Helms daughter. Off last year's "Riverside Battle Songs")
08-The Sadies-Anna Leigh (I love the surf-twang of the Sadies, this one is off this year's "New Seasons")
09-Blanche-So Long Cruel World (I was turned onto this band by one of you guys in the comments.....I don't remember who, but you know who you are, thanks. Off 2004's "If We Can't Trust The Doctors")
10-Blaze Foley and The Beaver Valley Boys-Cold, Cold World (I love Blaze Foley, this one is off of last year's release from the vaults "Cold, Cold World")
11-Dwight Yoakam-I Don't Care (Just As Long As You Love Me) (this is off Dwight's forthcoming Buck Owens tribute album)
12-Son Volt-Highways and Cigarettes (off of their newest, 2007's "The Search")
13-Bobby Bare Jr's Young Criminal-Where Is My Mind (Bobby Bare's son doing what is arguably the pixies most famous song....his is a very subdued take on it...but interesting. Off of last year's "The Longest Meow")
14-The Gourds-Promenade (man I love this one, been in my head for days.....off their just released "Noble Creatures")
15-The Corb Lund Band-The Truth Comes Out (Canadian country-rockers Corb Lund & co.'s song about climate change :).....not exactly.....but a good song. Off his 05 album "Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer")
16-Porter Wagoner-Eleven Cent Cotton (Porter Wagoner is back this year with an excellent album called Wagonmaster.....if you crave vintage country sounds.....get it)
17-Frank Carlier-White Trash (West Virginia local sings about life in west virginia...this song is very "Bottle Rockets-ish". Off of last year's "Americana 101".....this song rocks BTW)
18-Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles-Lonely Town of Love (newcomer Sarah Borges (pronounced Bor-Gess.....that's right, she's portuguese) comes on strong with this one off her 07 album "Diamonds In The Dark". This one reminds me of a twanged up Letters To Cleo song)
19-Two Cow Garage-No Shame (off their newest album "Three", crunchy alt-country in the vein of Lucero & Slobberbone)
20-Red Star Belgrade-Song For Ed (I love the first line in this one: "the alcoholics are calling you an alcoholic". This is a very Neil Youngish rocker. Off 2004's "The Real Traitors")
