comin' up...

just a quick post about what's coming up. Still working on that slobberbone sampler. After that I got a Chris Knight and a Gourds sampler in the works. Speaking of Chris Knight, I got some Chris Knight live shows and an ULTRA RARE early Chris Knight album that I'm pretty excited about.

in addition to that I have some more Neil Young I can post, found something called "on the beach sessions" but I can't seem to find any info on it....I don't think it's legit. Also got some Joe Ely and a cool Jerry Jeff Walker & Joe Ely show.

Ben Nichols & Cory Branan - Nights Like These (Richmond 8-6-07)

Here's a damn good boot. Lucero's Ben Nichols and the guy who he namechecks in "Tears Don't Matter Much" playing a nice little acoustic set together. If you're a Lucero fan you're gonna want to check this out. If you're a Cory Branan fan too ('course if you're a Cory Branan fan you're probably already a Lucero fan). They are also joined on one song by up and comers The Fox Hunt....which is cool too. Good sound and good atmosphere on this one.

A Truer Easter

Who says songs about Jesus have to suck. Here's a good set of mostly straightforward gospel songs (mostly). First I want to talk about the cover image I used. Now these three crosses, exactly like those in the picture are all over this area....every road just about you will see them. They first started appearing around here in the mid to late 80's and there were many local legends about them. These legends state that a local millionaire had a near death experience during which he had a vision of God who told him he would spare his life if he spent the rest of it building these wooden crosses and placing them beside highways. Other parts of the legend state that some folks didn't take too kindly to these crosses being on their land or near their land or what have you and tried to tear them down. Supposedly one guys tractor suddenly caught on fire, one guy's boat engine died and he was stranded in a lake. One guy even supposedly had a heart attack whilst trying to remove the wooden crosses. There were also stories of lightning striking them but nothing happening, and them surviving forest fires, floods and hurricanes.
Now I don't know how true those last parts are, but a little research has confirmed that the man in question was indeed a succesful businessman from Craigsville, WV named Bernard Coffindaffer. He had a heart attack in 1982 which was when he recieved his holy vision and life's mission. Pretty interesting stuff I thought.

Here is an article about his death in the NY Times

There is even an organization that carried on his mission after his death called "Christian Crosses"

Here is some more history about Mr. Coffindaffer

Slobberbone - Last Show 3-13-05

How 'bout some live slobberbone to kick off spring. This is probably the best boot I have found of theirs....not only because of the significance of it being their last show, but it's just a damned good boot. They play like it's their last show....running through almost all their best songs in a single night....plenty of debauchery as well. Here is a neat little write up I found on the show itself:

It was a sad day for Texas music on March 13, 2005. That’s when people from as far away as Europe crowded into a sold-out Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton to bid farewell to the State’s reigning ‘best bar band’. That final show was short on covers and long on remembrances, for the band and the audience alike. They resurrected a “Barrel Chested” era documentary film to kick off the night, standing quietly onstage while the film rolled on a screen set up near the entrance. Then they played for a little over two hours. While the album of the night seemed to be their second release, “Barrel Chested”, they managed to cover their entire career, but went sparingly on their last and most over-produced record, “Slippage”. Fittingly enough, the crowd seemed drunker than usual, even for a Slobberbone show. So while the beer and whiskey soaked crowd raised their bottles and glasses, the band kept playing songs about, mostly, drinking. When they first emerged on the scene way back in the early to mid 90s, they were compared to Uncle Tupelo, just like every other “alt country” rock band at the time; only these guys not only had a sense of humor, they, at least to this observer, didn’t take themselves quite as seriously as that by-then-defunct Illinois band. And like UT in the early days, their songs were part punk-rock, part southern-rock and part country. They mixed banjos and fiddles with the blaring electric guitars and channeled the feedback into glorious melodic anthems to lost love, lost dreams, and whiskey. Over the years, it became apparent that they probably owed more in the way of influence to Neil Young and Crazy Horse than to Uncle Tupelo. And now that it’s all over, it looks like frontman Brent Best will continue to play the occasional solo show and the rest of us, at least locally, can wait for the inevitable reunion shows. As far as bands go, it was a great run. Here’s to them!

Neil Young - Tonight's The Night Acetate

Many say tonight's the night is Neil's magnum opus....I don't know about that, but it's certainly a contender. This is a studio acetate of an early version of this album including a few songs that didn't make the final cut (though they did make it to other albums, like the superb On The Beach). Here is some more detailed info I found about this: http://www.sidestreetrecords.com/articles/acetateTonightsThe.html

This is worth having for the unreleased Bad Fog Of Lonliness alone (if you're a Neil Completist....c'mon I know you are)

My favorite Scott Miller song...

Most you guys know I'm a huge Scott Miller fan....all the way back to his pre V-Roys days. This is perhaps my favorite song of his. It's called Red Ball Express, and it's about the real life Red Ball Express from WWII. Scott is somewhat of a history scholar, and supposedly this is one of the most accurate portrayals of WWII in song there is.

Here's a link to a book about the Red Ball Express

Jimbo Mathus and His Knockdown Society - Knockdown in Nashville Live 1998 (Out of Print)

Here is a sadly out of print album from James "Jimbo" Mathus. Fans of deep blues and country blues will want to check this out. This was recorded in support of his Songs For Rosetta album, the Rosetta in question being Rosetta Patton....Charlie Patton's daughter, and Jimbo's nanny as a child (hows that for blues cred). The band includes members of North Mississippi Allstars, so fans of them will also want to check this out.
Here are some release notes from Jimbo himself:
James "Jimbo" Mathus & His KnockDown Society, "KnockDown In Nashville". This CD was recorded in Nashville at Billy Blocks Western Beats Roots Revival in 1998 and was a benefit for Rosetta Patton who was Charlie Patton's daughter and Jimbo's nanny. The KnockDown Society consist of Stu Cole, who was also in Jimbo's Squirrel Nut Zippers, Cody & Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi AllStars, Greg Humphries, of Hobex, Hawkeye Jordan and Greg Bell. The 8 songs on this CD run from country blues to juke joint boogie to gospel and country rock. All songs, on this CD are by Jimbo except The Christian Life and I Got Mine. This CD is distributed on Jimbo's, KnockDown South Records.com. God bless Mississippi and pass the ANTISEPTIC...jimbo

2 Who'll Sop My Gravy
3 Don't Make Me Wait
4 Blues For Blind Mellon
5 No Monkey Business

(funny tidbit...I read his influences as Hank Williams Jr. Kimbrough :), now that would make a cool concept album "Whiskey Bent and Burn in Hell" :P )

why do you need John Hartford?

John Hartford - Aero-plain (out of print)

A strangely out of print album, especially considering you can buy officialy released outtakes collection of the same album (if you like this, you should definitely check that out). This is considered a landmark bluegrass album....one of the best of the so called hippie-grass movement of the early 70s that included guys like New Grass Revival, Old and In The Way, David Grisman, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, etc...you know, the original jam bands (the ones that didn't suck). This album also has the distinction of having one of the coolest album covers ever. Released in 1971, it's a must have for any fan of bluegrass, folk, or just damned good music.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Well Known Secret (Boston 11-22-76) + Bonus Disc

As promised some more Shakey, as I said before I just can't get enough of him lately. This one is killer.....great sound (though of course it can't rival his damn near perfect official live releases), and great set. Discs 1 and 3 are solo acoustic, and discs 2 and 4 are with Crazy Horse. Killer version of Cortez on disc 2 (contender for my favorite Neil Young song) followed by an extended Cinnamon Girl jam that is equally killer. Check out Roll Another Number on disc 3, and the whole shebang is wrapped up with a rollicking Southern Man. This is a killer boot folks.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

This thing came with a bonus disc entitled Electric Live in NYC that is a Neil Young and Crazy Horse show from 2 days before this show. A nice treat I gotta say. The sound is not as good but there is a sweet electric version of Helpless at the end that I can't stop listening to.

Old Crow Medicine Show - Troubles Up and Down The Road EP

Might as well throw this in while I'm at it. This is a limited edition EP that was released in 2001, I'm guessing sometime after Eutaw. This is one of my favorite Old Crow discs.....it's just a young eagar band playing good old timey music. The first track Rub Alcohol Blues is killer. Alos features probably the earliest recorded version of Wagon Wheel (barring Bob Dylan's original) that has a nice steel guitar on it.

1. Rub Alcohol Blues
2. Big Sciota
3. Blue-Eyed Girl
4. Darlin' Corey
5. Little Sadie
6. Wagon Wheel

(excerpt from liner notes) The Old Crow Medicine Show was kicking around the foam house in Whites Creek the other day. All the boys were there and all their dogs too, hanging round the hoods of various junk cars, spitting and smoking, laughing and joking. Someone started talking about Prince's Hot Chicken Shack which is down the way from the old Crows nest on Dickerson Rd. Dill pickles and greasy chicken laid over two slices of Bunny Bread. Of course we immediately started thinking about our buddy Dub who kept Prince's in business through some of the lean years. Then someone remembered a recording we made for Dub back in September, the Dub dub as it was then known.

Old Crow Medicine Show - Troubles Up And Down The Road

Old Crow Medicine Show - Live at the World Cafe EP

'kay, so I was gonna post their second album Eutaw which I thought was out of print. Well turns out they just re-released it a couple weeks ago....Check it out. If you enjoy Old Crow, you'll surely like that. What I can give you though is this live EP from iTunes they put out shortly after OCMS became a runaway success. It's a pretty good EP I have to say, good slow plucked banjo version of Wagon Wheel on here.

  1. CC Rider
  2. Wagon Wheel
  3. Tell It Me
  4. Wrecking Ball
  5. Odd N Ends

More Neil coming...right now, some fine mixes...

got some Neil Young boots coming up...mid 70s stuff mostly. Also further down the pipe I've got a few Truer Samplers lined up. These include Slobberbone, Chris Knight and A Truer Easter at the end of the month.

What I got for you right now though are a few mixes made by some friends over at altcountrytab.ca. They include Michael Hurley (Snock), Jim White, Butch Hancock, Peter Case, John Hartford, and one of all canadian artists. So thanks to all those guys over there for their hard work....these are some great mixes folks, I especially enjoyed the Snock and Jim White as they were both semi-new to me.

Been on kind of a Neil Young kick lately....

as if you couldn't tell....

Both songs from "Time Fades Away"....call it a preview if you will.

More classic Neil (last song is also from Time Fades Away....just to keep tying it together)

Neil Young - Time Fades Away (Out of Print)

This is reportedly Neil Young's least favorite album. Must conjure up bad memories for him....whatever the case this album has been out of print since shortly after it's release in 1973. Known as the first album of Neil's "Ditch Trilogy" (which includes On The Beach & Tonight's The Night) after reaching success with Harvest and not knowing how to handle it.....to quote Neil he "headed for the ditch". It's a pretty good album and a shame that it's officially unavailable. That may be remedied sometime soon what with all the Neil Young Archive releases coming out (and damn how good was Fillmore and Massey Hall....amazing releases).

Buffalo Springfield - The Missing Herd (Rarities and Live)

This is a treat right here. A set of rare and live proto country-rock pioneers Buffalo Springfield. If you don't know it was Stephen Stills and Neil Young's band in the mid 60's (along with Richie Furray of Poco). The second disc of this, the live stuff.....is damned good. The rarities are good too, but I find myself spinning the live disc alot more. Features some of my favorite Buffalo Springfield songs: Mr. Soul, A Child's Claim to Fame and Bluebird (check out the extended mix at the end of disc one and the live jam at the end of disc two). If you like Neil Young......you'll probably like this one........it's got Neil Young roaring guitar work all over it.

Guy Clark - Keepers Outtakes

Wow! Does it get much better than this? Not really. This right here is an amazing set. The REST of what Guy Clark recorded for his Keepers album (which in it's own right was near perfect). Now we have the ones that weren't keepers......the leftovers. All I've got to say is whoever chose the "keepers" had a hell of a job picking them out, cause to these ears they are all keepers.

Now the compiler of this has omitted the official tracks (the ones released on keepers) but I'm sure most of you guys have it anyway. What's cool is to add the official tracks in with the leftovers and you have 3 excellent (though repetitive) Guy Clark shows.

Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks (The New York Sessions)

It's a Dylan two-fer. Probably my other favorite Bob Dylan album. The story on this is that Bob Dylan recorded the whole album in New York but scrapped most of the songs, then went back to Minneapolis and re-recorded them with his brother. This here be the original sessions.
