Sleazefest '94

Ok, this one is for RYP @ Twighlightzone. If you haven't checked his sight out, and you like trashy, surfy, twangy, garage rock sounds.....then you really need to check it out. Anyway, this is the official CD recording of the inaugural Sleazefest in Chapel Hill, North Carolina which took place late August 1994. Organized by Rick Miller of Southern Culture on The Skids as an answer to all the "lollapalooza" and "woodstock '94" type festivals happening that year, he assembled a who's who of trash rock, rockabilly, and garage rock, called it Sleazefest, and held it at a local BBQ joint. Just listening to this you can tell this must have been one hell of a party, and I guarantee you there was more than one guitar neck covered in BBQ sauce fingerprints before this was over. Here is a link to more info, pics and the liner notes.

  1. Hang Up - The Strychnines
  2. Hitch - Chrome Daddy Discos
  3. I Got Your Number - The Woggles

Old 97's/Funland - Stoned/Garage Sale

Continuing on with the old Centro stuff, here is a split 10" single from 1995 of Old 97's and Funland. Now most of you guys who come to this blog probably know who the Old 97's are, but who the hell are Funland? Well Funland were Peter Schmidt(vocals/guitar/bass), ClarkVogeler (guitar), Mike Hosty (slide guitar) & Will Johnson (drums/background vocals). That's right, Funland was Will Johnson's band prior to Centro-Matic. Also worth mentioning is that guitarist Chuck Vogeler went on to join the band Toadies (after Possum Kingdom), and Peter Schmidt is a thriving solo artist in Texas.
So this is supposedly Old 97's first split 10" single (released after Hitchhike To Rhome) and they teamed up with their good friends Funland and they decided to cover each other's songs. So what you end up with is Old 97's doing their song "Stoned" and Funland's "Garage Sale", and Funland doing their song "Garage Sale" and Old 97's "Stoned". Their take on "Stoned" is pretty good too, so fans of Old 97's, Centro-Matic, & Will Johnson will want to check this out.

REQ: Centro-Matic - Line Connection Aim

As promised, Centro-Matic's out of print 1997 cassette "Line Connection Aim". Now I don't like this one near as good as the other one, but there are some cool songs on it like the beatlesesque "Most Everyone Will Find", "The Little Guitars", and "Nothing Could Be Better". I love how you can hear the phone ringing in a few spots too.
Oh, and a correction from the other post....I said they were one of Patterson Hood's Favorite bands.....well apparently they are his favorite band. You can read all about it on their myspace page (linked below).

  • 1. The Injury Specialist (2:15)
    2. Nothing Could Be Better (3:57)

REQ: Centro-Matic - Non Directional Jetpack Race

Okay, this is Centro's first right here. From a cassette released in 1995, it has been long out of print.....but luckily for us has been floating around the internet for a while. Centro-Matic is led by the prolific Will Johnson (who has a thriving solo career) and the entire band is in the side band South San Gabriel (for the quieter stuff). Actually Centro-Matic itself could be considered by some a side project for Will Johnson but I guess that depends on who you ask. Now I don't know much about Centro, just that they are one of Patterson Hood's favorite bands and that they lean more towards the "alt" side of alt country. But these two out-of-print early albums (the other one will be next) are pretty decent, and hint at a band on their way to something good.

  • 1. Scoreless Tie #2 (4:02)
    2. Fall Of The Scenester Girl (3:28)
    3. Quart Date (2:17)
    4. Slip Away (2:31)
    5. My Supermodel Girlfriend Gone AWOL (2:12)
    6. Caught Between Us (2:33)
    7. Misunderstanding Surplus In The Getaway Car (3:16)
    8. Hit The Sky, Hit This Guy (2:56)
    9. My Test (4:16)
    10. Livingston (3:38)
    11. Unnamed (0:55)
    12. Ride It Out (1:16)
    13. The Execution Of Some Sixty-Odd Drummers (2:05)
    14. Fan In My Car [Baboon] (4:46)
    15. Sack Of The Gorgon Empire (3:44)
    16. Vincent Goes Important (2:46)
    17. Pretty Wholesome Is The Eggplant II (3:24)
    18. We Are Wrecking This Show (3:27)
    19. Keep The Phoenix In Slow Motion (2:50)
    20. A Common Display (3:58)
    21. Calling Up The Bastards (2:22)
    22. Call The Legion In Tonight (3:04)
    23. The Day Of The Rock Show (Curb Your Turbulence) (2:27)

Goodbye Nashville, this is for you.....if you would post the new one I would greatly appreciate it.

REQ: Be Good Tanyas - Blue Horse

Ok, here is The Be Good Tanyas first album, from 2001, Blue Horse. It's a pretty good mix of folk, bluegrass, and something else that I can't quite pin down. The 2 girls singing have these really hypnotic voices that really get to me though.

Wrinkle Neck Mules - Mason and Andy Acoustic (Alley Katz Richmond, VA 12-06-06)

Here's a nice little acoustic set from my latest musical obsession. It's a damned good recording....really intimate, like acoustic shows are supposed to be. Recorded at Alley Katz in Richmond as the opening act for DBT frontman Patterson Hood. Fans of Uncle Tupelo's "March 16-20" album will surely dig this, it's got the same vibe as that. Some of my favorite cuts off this are "Push The Pedal", "Pale Colored Hue", and "Okeechobee". Definitely check this out guys if you are into Uncle Tupelo's acoustic side.

They have a new album that just came out. It's called "Wicks Have Met" and you can buy it here (I haven't heard it yet....but that's just becuase I haven't bought it yet).

http://www.wrinkleneckmules.com/ (That's where I got these live shows BTW, gotta love a band that puts there music out there for you......and thanks to willy99 @ wild safari for pointing them out to me.)

Bubbapalooza Vol. 1: Chronicle of The Redneck Underground

Here's an old out of print album for you, and a rare one at that. Bubbapalooza was an annual concert held in Atlanta, GA and was organized by Gregory Dean Smalley. Now you may be wondering who Gregory Dean Smalley is, and some of you big DBT fans may even know. I'll get to who he is in a minute, but first more about this album. Now back in the early to mid 90's there was a scene around the Atlanta and Athens areas of Georgia that was dubbed (by Deacon Lunchbox) the "Redneck Underground". See this was back before anyone knew what to call this type of music, so there were all kinds of names floating around....."no depression", "insurgent country", "redneck underground", "cow punk", etc... Anyway, the Redneck Underground specifically included bands from Athens, Atlanta, and Chapel Hill, NC (which had it's own killer scene back then). So in 1995 Gregory Dean Smalley decided they needed a festival.....and what better name than Bubbapalooza.....a play on the then new and still credible Lollapalooza. This is the recording of that first festival.
Now you'll see a couple familiar names here.....mostly Scott Miller (pre V-Roys) and Southern Culture On The Skids. But there are others here like Kelly Hogan who was in Deacon Lunchbox's band. Oh, and Gregory Dean Smalley....who I promised I would get to. I'm sure alot of you have heard of him, he is the subject of DBT's song "The Living Bubba" and this album is one of his few recorded moments with his band "The Diggers". Here is a link to an article written by Patterson Hood about Smalley and his song "The Living Bubba", check it out.
Standout tracks are "Loweena", "Mama Was A Dancer At The Clermont Lounge", Scott Miller's sublime "Napoleon", "George Jones (Has Never Sung About My Girl" and of course the highlight of the whole album.....The Diggers' "She's Breakin' My Heart (While I'm Drinkin' Her Beer)"

  • 1. Loweena, the Urban Redneck Queen - Deacon Lunchbox
    2. Fakin' It - The Vidalias
    3. Mama Was a Dancer at the Clermont Lounge - Redneck Greece Deluxe
    4. George Jones (Has Never Sung About My Girl) - Slim Chance and The Convicts
    5. Can't Find a Place to Stay - Steam Donkeys
    6. Outta Town - Jennie B and the Speedbillies
    7. Rockabilly Show - Blacktop Rockets
    8. 2 Pigs in a Blanket/She's My Little Biscuit Eater - Southern Culture on the Skids
    9. Cabbagetown - Delta Angels
    10. Napoleon - Scott Miller
    11. Candy Kisses - Greasetrap
    12. She's Breakin' My Heart (While I'm Drinkin' Her Beer) - The Diggers
One other thing to mention is that Bubbapalooza stills goes one every year at the Star City Bar in Atlanta GA.

Wrinkle Neck Mules - Cinco De Mayo Live (at Brown's Island Richmond - 5-5-06)

A recent discovery for me here (thanks to willy99 @ wild safari). I'm really diggin' these guys, they have a great rootsy sound that incorporates equal parts Dillards, Uncle Tupelo, & Neil young (with Crazy Horse of course) with a dash of punk attitude thrown in.....at least that's my take on it. This was recorded at Brown's Island in their home base town of Richmond VA. It's a pretty good recording, and gives you a great overview of the band. Fans of DBT, Slobberbone or Lucero will probably dig this. Songs to check out are "Liza", "Big Dipper", "No Consolation", "Okeechobee", one of the better covers of "Eastbound & Down" I've heard, and the true tale of an explosion of a Wild Turkey factory "17 Miles of Bourbon. So if you like twang, gruff vocals, great instrumention (these guys can flat out play their guitars, mandolins & banjers), and a good story song.....check these guys out.

Forgot to mention....they have a new album coming out this week. Check it out here, should be good.

Steve Earle - Ottawa Folk Festival August 18, 2006

Pretty good recording here, just Steve and his guitar....and maybe a little jawharp (sorry no Allison Moorer). He runs through alot of his excellent mid 90's material (his best years in my opinion) and throws in the mandatory "Copperhead Road" at the end. The sound quality on this is pretty damned good.....almost professional quality.
Sorry no artwork for this one (I got lazy).
