Howdy...

So lots of comments, glad to see we are back up and running. Someone requested a repost of Bottle Rockets Live in Heilbronn Germany...well you are in luck my friend because that is a recent post over at Rock Is Dead. Get it here

Someone else requested Chris Knight, can get those back up within the week. Anybody picked up the new one yet? I'm still anxious to hear it and my local shop (of course) did not have it. The didn't have blue mountain either. Now friends to understand the ramifications and implications of this you have got to understand that this particular record store used to have a VAST alt-country section dating back to 1996 or 7 when the original store opened (I say original store only because it was better, but it got bought out and absorbed by a larger established local record shop a few years later). This new record store continued with a killer alt-country section that kept my thirst for sweet sweet music quenced but it gradualy began to taper. That once proud alt-country section that used to be at least 9 rows wide is now a mere 2 rows wide, and most of that is Drive-by Truckers and Cross Canadian Ragweed.
Now this store being located in a college town my only summation is that there was a large number of former employees who had great taste in music (I know this for fact because I knew a few of them personally)....however nowadays I almost hate to go in there with their bloated prices and poor selection. One good thing is now and then a great vinyl surprise will pop up (recently picked up "Ballad of Easy Rider" for a couple bucks), but all I'm left with are fond memories that get less fond the more I frequent this store (which nowadays is fairly infrequent)

anyways I have rambled. Just wanted to say thanks for all the comments and even though I may not respond to everyone I do read every one.

I do have more out of print Backsliders coming, their second album and a repost of their live EP. And yes I have noticed there are a couple other bands calling themselves the backsliders which makes things pretty confusing when you try to search for info. No I don't have the Vol. 2 of the Possom set, don't even know if there is one....I will also try to see if I can track down the missing track.

oh, and I CAN'T FUCKING BELIEVE I missed out on batch 3 of the Appalachian Refugee demos....dammit man! I read the post at 11:45....clicked over to the site, and SON OF A BITCH! already sold out. Thanks for the heads up though Vaughn.

Out Of Print: George Jones - Best of Vol. 1 Hardcore Honky Tonk

Well, this is kind of straying a bit from the Out Of Print Classics format because this is a compilation, but in my opinion this is the finest George Jones comp that has ever been made. Just look at that track list and see how much early possum gold is on there! This right here ain't no "High Tech Redneck" or "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" folks....this is THE POSSUM, singing the best damned tear jerkers ever! I can't say enough how damned good this aptly named comp is, so I won't. Just download it and see for yourself.

Out Of Print: The Backsliders - Throwin' Rocks At The Moon

So I think I'm going to start throwing up some...what I'm calling out of print classics, starting with this one. This was The Backsliders, from Raleigh, NC's first full length album from way back in 1997, and buddy it's a good one. Fans of the Bottle Rockets, and just loud twangy bar band country rock will surely enjoy this one. Standout tracks: the title track, Hey Sheriff, Paper Doll World, Last Train, If you Talk To My Baby, Broken Wings, and hell just about the whole damned thing.

Truesounds - Summer '08

What would a comeback be without a music post? So here's a sampler to (hopefully) make up for the 3 months of downtime.

1 A Ghost To Most - Drive By Truckers
Best song off the DBT's latest?.....you decide

2 Tiger Tom Dixon's Blues - Rod Picott
A recent discovery for me via Slaid Cleaves. Song is off his 2001 album of the same name

3 Lowlight - Wrinkle Neck Mules (ft.Will Oldham)
Still love the mules my friends, this song has been bouncing around my brain for a while now....I didn't even realize it was Will Oldham singing on this one till I got a hard copy of the album.....great, great song here....further solidifying my love for the mules. Off "Pull The Brake" from 2006.

4 She's Gone - Langhorne Slim
Frantic folk? This ones got so much energy when you play it in your car your fuel economy goes up (wow that was a bad joke....). Off his new self titled label debut album.

5 Into the mystic - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Most people aren't aware that Jason Isbell and his band The 400 Unit recently put out a live EP called "Live at the Twist and Shout". Well he did, and it's good....this song is off it

6 I've Got A Plan - Scott Miller & The Commonwealth
Man I just love this song....the way he sings it...that one errant chord after he says "the cod and the bean"....this song is one of his best in my opinion. Off 2003's Upside Downside

7 No One Told Me - Kane Welch Kaplin
Just a groovin' little song off their self titled album from last year.

8 Defy The Moon - Drag The River
Another new discovery for me. These guys ain't half bad, and this is off their latest 2008 album "You Can't Live This Way"

9 Frankie's Gun! - The Felice Brothers
Geez, is there a buzz about this band or what?....This is probably their most popular song, but it's also my favorite so I just threw it on here. Off their self-titled 2008 album

10 Queenie 's Song - Guy Clark
My God I love this song, It's been popping in my head here recently as there is a local pizza joint called "Queens" that I drive by daily, so I threw it on here. Off his 2002 album "The Dark".

11 Beaumont - Hayes Carll
Most of you probably already know that Hayes Carll's latest album "Trouble In Mind" is pretty damned good....here is a sampling of it.

12 Color of a Lonely Heart Is Blue - Old 97's
This is off Old 97's latest long awaited album Blame it on Gravity. If you liked their last album...you'll probably dig it (or vice versa)

13 Ain't Glad I'm Leaving - Justin Townes Earle
Sleeper/surprise album of the year?.....I think so. Off his latest "The Good Life" which rings through the speakers like they are channeling 1963 (yeah I said it)

14 I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory - Kathleen Edwards
The Canadian Lucinda? Maybe. Off her newest "Asking for Flowers"...which is a pretty damned fine album

15 Blue Side of the Mountain - Steeldrivers
What happens when you get a bunch of well travelled Nashville session musicians together to record an album?.....they make some damned fine bluegrass apparently. Off their 2008 self titled debut album....bluegrass album of the year?

16 Fireline Road - James McMurtry
Our friend Mr. McMurtry has another damn fine album out this year called "Just Us Kids". It's good.

17 Days Aren't Long Enough - Steve Earle(with Allison Moorer)
Pretty good love song and duet with his wife off last years much lauded "Washington Square Serenade".

18 I'll Be Glad - Bonnie Prince Billy (with Shannon Stephens)
What's this, Will Oldham has a new album out too....yes, and it's one of his best in my opinion. Some great, great tunes on there

19 Amsterdam - Jon Dee Graham
Word is Jon Dee Graham recently had a bad accident and is struggling with his medical bills. If you like this song, it's off his killer Live album from last year "Swept Away"

20 Things Ain't Like They Used to Be - The Black Keys
Probably stretching the boundaries I have set for this site a little, but hell I'm willing to bet more than a few of you are Black Keys fans. To my ears, this is the song of the year. I just can't get enough of it. Off their stylisticaly departed new album "Attack and Release"

Don't call it a comeback...

So I said check back in August...well it's August.....a few weeks in, but August no less. So where does that leave us music wise...well there are a few 08 albums I've been digging. Hayes Carll's newest is pretty damn good even if it's not as good as "Little Rock", The Steeldrivers have been scratching my bluegrass itch, Reckless Kelly's latest is classic Kelly, been digging The Felice Brothers like everyone else I'm sure, The Avett Brothers new EP ain't too bad, speaking of EP's....Jason Isbell put out a killer live one earlier this year, James McMurtry has a classic album out this year, and my favorite so far has been Justin Townes Earle's classic country throwback "The Good Life".

But really what I'm really looking forward too is all getting ready to come out. New Blue Mountain called Midnight in Mississippi is due out next week (and the album of re-recordings of their favorites Omnibus as well), a new Todd Snider album of protest songs called Peace Queer (can't wait for this one friends), a new Chris Knight album called Heart of Stone also out next week, a new Slaid Cleaves is due out later this year that I'm excited about because it's produced by Gurf Morlix. Speaking of Gurf, word is Ray Wylie Hubbard has a live album possibly coming out later this year that I'm dying to hear.

Then there is a new Scott Miller album also in the works for later this year. Scott is doing something I think is awesome, he's selling limited edition demos of said album (Appalachian Refugee) with custom unique artwork created by him to help finance the real studio album....pretty cool concept I thought....too bad I didn't find out about it till they were already sold out of the second pressing....here's to hoping for a third.

So as you can see, it's gonna be a great year for music, and I'm pretty excited about this second half.

oh, and it's good to be back guys, thanks for all the comments and support as always.
