The Gourds - Lower 48 (Video from Pickathon 2007)

Just found this. Damn it looks like everyone is having a good time. What a killer show.

The Gourds/Shiny Ribs - Pickathon 2007

This is really fuckin' good. The Gourds & Gourds' side project Shiny Ribs from this past August at Pickathon 2007. Man, I'd never heard of Shiny Ribs, but apparently it's just what they are calling themselves when they do acoustic shows.....seems like it's mostly acoustic, might as well be the Gourds. Maybe it's Kevin Russell's solo project, I couldn't ever find any clear info. All I know is there is a song on here that is Kevin Russell solo called War that is so damn good. Also the Gourds have a new album out this year that is also damn good. Download this, if you like it....go buy their new album. It's called Noble Creatures.

6. Satan's Paradise-Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch & Fats Kaplin
off last years "Lost John Dean". I just love these guys

Infectious song off their latest "Emotionalism"

Old 97's & Chris Whitley - KCRW Sessions

This is an interesting pairing, but I got it like this, so I left it like this. One thing they both had in common at the time was that they were both just starting to reach the top of their games. The Old 97's set is amazing. I mean they are doing promotion for "Wreck Your Life", the songs are still fresh, and the band is hungry. What's particularly intersting are the interview segments....really took me back. I mean they didn't even know what to call their music cause the word "Alt Country" hadn't been popularised yet. And they talk about getting ready to do a show with "a great new band out of chapel hill called whiskeytown"........"they say that kid Ryan isn't gonna make it to 28". This really took me back, cause this was around the time I was really starting to dig into what we now call Alt Country. A great set. The Whitley set ain't too bad either.....searing blues rock as expected.

Todd Snider - Colorado Demos

Couldn't find much info on this one here. Near as I can tell, it was recorded sometime between "Step Right Up" and "Viva Satelite". That would put it in the 1997 time frame. Makes a nice little linker between the two albums. If you dig old Todd, this is right up your alley.

The Sadies - Live in Brighton 10-26-04

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This is the promised Sadies show with the steel guitar. It's fair sound quality, definitely listenable, though not the greatest. What makes it special though is the oh so sweet steel guitar mixed in with the Good brothers guitar workouts. Love this set-up for them.

A quick heads up - Magnolia Electric Co.

There are some great, great live Magnolia Electric Co. shows on their website here. One of you fine commenters turned me on to this fact, and recommends the Dec. 6th show. I'm just now diggin' through this myself, some fantastic stuff on there. If you don't know whether you would like MECo or not, here's a taster...

ahh hell, this is a 5 part set, so here's the rest. The songs are (in order):
What Comes After The Blues
Talk To Me Devil, Again
Memphis Moon
Down The Wrong Road Both Ways
Leave The City

Recorded June 16, 2007 in Lleida (where ever that is)

Richard Buckner -Buckner Box: Live in 1996

This was quite a find right here, and someone clearly put a lot of effort into this. Not sure who, as they never name themselves, but they compiled this and did all the artwork and everything.....so thanks Mr. Richard Buckner fan. This is my favorite Buckner era, as I don't care much for his newer work. But this "box set" is good and a damn good starter for someone unfamiliar with Mr. Buckner. I would describe him as....well imagine if Dwight Yoakam were a folk singer....well that's not a very good description....he has a similar timber to his voice as Dwight is about the only commonality. He is a mighty fine songwriter though, and put out some killer albums back in the mid 90's (specifically "Bloomed) which is the era this box set focuses on. One more time though, I would like to thank the original compiler of this fantastic set. It's obvious they put alot of love into it.

Slaid Cleaves (and The Men of Steel) - Live at Little Brothers Columbus, OH 4-20-04

This is a great show here. I actually like this better than any of his studio work. Slaid is in his element here.....playing live. I wish he would just go ahead and put out an official live album. Listen to this and you will see why. If you like good songwriting with a country bend, this is for you (surprisingly, lots of yodeling on here too). Features 2 of my favorite songs "Lydia" and "One Good Year". There are a few hiccups in the recording during the 3rd song, but overall this is a fantastic boot.

Gene Clark - Flowers On My Grave (Live and Demos)

This is a great little disc here. What information I gathered was that this was never officially released, or was some kind of bootleg. Either way it's incredible, and fans of Gene Clark will want to check this out. The first half, the Mountain Stage show is what makes this....just great little intimate performance. If you're not very familiar with Gene Clark, he was one of the original members of the Byrds.....actually the guy who wrote 8 Miles High. The real meat of his work though is post byrds. He cut a great album with the Gosdin Brothers, two legendary albums with Doug Dillard of The Dillards (you know, the Darlin boys off Andy Griffith....so much more than that though) and then a string of fantastically epic albums through the early 70's. Dying in 1991, he is definitely a forgotten legend. Though I hear he's getting some props nowadays from the likes of Allison Krauss, Robert Plant, and The Black Crowes on their new albums (the Krauss/Plant one actually has 2 Clark songs)

Doug Sahm (with Augie Meyers & The Gourds) - S.D.Q. 98 (Live)

Incredibly little out of print album here. Recorded live about a year before Doug Sahm's, we find him with his trusty sidekick Augie Meyers & backed by none other than The Gourds back when they were fairly unknown. The Gourds are Sahm disciples, so they fit in perfect as his backing band. So much so that I wouldn't have known it was the Gourds had it not been on the cover. Uncle Tupelo fans might recognize one of the songs on here....that's right "Give Back The Key To My Heart" which Doug wrote & recorded in the mid 70's and sang backup on Uncle Tupelo's version.

The Supersuckers - Live at The Bluebird Theater 10-1-04

This has two things that make it a must have bootleg. Killer performance and killer sound quality. I was actually kind of amazed that I couldn't find existing artwork for this, as it is a fairly well known show among fans, with some even recognizing this as greater than any official live album OR studio album. Now that's saying alot. If you like your alt country with a little more punk than country, well this is right up your alley. Fans of Mike Ness and the countrier side of Social Distortion will surely dig this. But don't you other guys discount it either....it's good stuff. Not to be missed is the cover of Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song".

Ray Wylie Hubbard (with Gurf Morlix) - Live at the Everyday Inn 6-10-06

Sorry for the lack of posts folks. To make up for it, here is a killer show from Ray Wylie Hubbard. Download it, you'll thank me later. This is a great show because the audience has.....really good taste in music :p (listen to it, and you'll get that). Also a killer version of "wanna rock and roll" (more intense than any other version I've heard), and he finishes it off with one of the best versions of "The messenger" I have ever heard as well. Gurf is here too backing him up and playing some killer licks.
