Centro-Matic (with Jason Isbell) - The Mercy Lounge, Nashville TN August 24, 2007

I know I've got some Centro fans out there, this ones for you guys. This is pretty interesting, Centro-Matic with Jason Isbell on guitar. The sound is very clear, very good, and I'm sure you Centro fans will eat this up. Jason Isbell fans, there's not really much on here for you guys, as these are all Centro-Matic (I.E. Will Johnson) songs. But it makes an interesting listen none-the-less.
Jason and his band The 400 unit are currently touring with Centro-Matic. They both have put out good albums this year. Isbell's "Sirens of the Ditch" and Centro's EP "Operation Motorcide".

Andre Williams and The Sadies - Hot As Hell (Live at Roskilde 1999)

As far as bootlegs go, this one is what you might call a "released" bootleg. That is, it was released by one of those shady European record labels. The info I found said this was recorded in 1999 at Roskilde Festival in denmark and released on yellow vinyl. However, I could not for the life of my find any album art for this. So here is a cool pic of Andre Williams:

Andre Williams is a forgotten R&B/Rock singer from way back....very reminiscent of Screaming Jay Hawkins. He recorded a killer album with the Sadies in 1999 entitled Red Dirt that was put out by Bloodshot Records (it's fantastic, go get it) and this show was obviously in support of that album.

  1. Surfin' In Country Hell
  2. Alleluia/Proud Mary
  3. I Can Tell
  4. Car With The Star
  5. She's Allright
  6. I Wanna Be Your Favorite Pair Of Pajamas
  7. Jail Bait
  8. Agile, Mobile, Hostile
  9. Tell Me Why
  10. Mustang Sally
  11. Let Me Put It In (Your Pussy Is Gut)

Re-Post: Wrinkle Neck Mules 2-for-1 SPECTACULAR!!!!

That's right, a 2-for-1 RE-POST-TACULAR!!!

I pulled these off their official site a while back, made some artwork and posted em up here. Well now I'm re-posting them. Why, well mostly for Vaughn.....but also because they are a great band who put out an excellent album this year called "The Wicks Have Met". If you like rootsy, acoustic driven music....you will dig this. If you like the acoustic side of Uncle Tupelo, you will surely dig this.

more on Earl Scruggs - His Family and Friends

Just found the entire clip of the scene from that trailer. This is the mighty Doc Watson with Earl and the boys doing the Carter Family's "John Hardy Was a Desperate Little Man" (surely you Uncle Tupelo fans will recognize this song ;-) ). This song is not on the album, but is on the DVD. Which for the record is called Earl Scruggs: Bluegrass Legend - His Family and Friends.

Earl Scruggs - His Family and Friends (ft. Byrds, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Doc Watson)

Another criminally underrated out of print album from Earl Scruggs. This is the one people.....this album is fantastic. Recorded in 1969 for a television documentary, not released on vinyl till 1971. This album is where that Byrds clip a few posts back came from. At the time Earl's son Randy was still in high school, of which there are some humerous soundbites about during his performance of Black Mountain Rag. Features such heavyweights as Doc Watson, The Byrds, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan (though he doesn't sing). If you are a fan of the Dirt Band's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" album.....this is right up your alley. And besides, where else are you gonna hear 1. foggy mt. breakdown played on a synthesizer, and 2. Earl Scruggs speak out against the Vietnam war?

There is a DVD available of this (Get the DVD here) that I will surely be getting. You can watch the trailer here (sorry, embedding was disallowed)

  1. Nine Pound Hammer
  2. Lonesome Ruben
  3. My Home's Across The Blue Ridge Mountain (with Joan Baez)
  4. Love is Just a Four Letter Word (with Joan Baez)
  5. The Last Thing On My Mind (with Doc Watson)
  6. Streamlined Cannonball (with Doc Watson)
  7. Nashville Skyline Rag (with Bob Dylan)
  8. Foggy Mountain Breakdown (with Gil Tryhall)
  9. You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (with The Byrds)
  10. Nothin' To It (with The Byrds)
  11. Salty Dog Blues (with The Morris Brothers)
  12. On Top Of Old Smokey (with The Morris Brothers)
  13. Black Mountain Rag (Randy Scruggs)
  14. Foggy Mountain Breakdown

Townes Van Zandt - The Whole Coffeehouse, Minnesota University 1973

This is a great TVZ boot....of which there are many, but his voice really seems to shine on this one. If you have been wanting to get into Townes but have been intimidated by his vast catolouge or some such other reason, this is for you. This makes a very good intro to the genius known as Townes Van Zandt. Of course, you fans will probably want this too (if you don't already have it).

1. Intro 0:29
2. I'll Be Here in the Morning 3:09
3. Cuckoo Song 3:17
4. Hobo Bill 3:06
5. Where I Lead Me 3:13
6. Broke Down Engine Blues 5:12
7. For the Sake of the Song 5:02
8. Nothin' 2:46
9. Talkin' Thunderbird Blues 2:22
10. Pancho and Lefty 3:40
11. Mr. Mudd and Mr Gold 2:35
12. Tecumseh Valley 4:26
13. The Ballad of Irah Hayes 3:58
14. (Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria 4:21
15. Tying Ten Knots in the Devil's Tail 2:27

Steve Earle - Austin City Limits Festival 9-15-07

I guess some of you may have been wondering what that last post was all about.....well it was foreshadowing man! Here we have a super fresh Steve Earle boot from less than a week ago. Pretty interesting too, as the first half is mostly solo and older stuff (and features and excellent tribute to TVZ at the beginning I might add). While the second half is stuff off his upcoming album "Washington Square Serenade" and feature his wife (Allison Moorer) on a couple tracks, and a DJ providing backbeats on almost all of them. That's not as weird as it sounds either, it actually blends in with the songs pretty well, and before you know it, you forget it's there. I do love the fact that the DJ is named appropriately, "DJ Duke" :).

This means something.....this is important...

The Backsliders - From Raleigh, North Carolina EP

Had some interest in The Backsliders a while back, so here's a nice little out of print EP....a live EP I might add. It's damned good too.....short but sweet. Features one of my favorite songs of thier's (which was only released on this EP) "Yep!". Also features their classic "Hey Sheriff".....overall this is a killer EP from a great little forgotten band.

1. The Pain Of Love
2. Number 5
3. Lexington Avenue
4. Hey Sheriff
5. High Fashion Queen
6. Yep!

The Byrds - 8 Miles High in Amsterdam 7-7-70

This is a killer, killer boot. Amazingly, I couldn't find any artwork for it, so I had to whip some up real quick. The sound quality on this one is amazing, almost as good as the "fillmore" album. Fantastic set too. The only downsides are the radio station identifiers that pop up seemingly randomly throughout.....I can live with it though, cause this is the best Byrds boot I believe I've heard. Features my favorite era of the Byrds too.....the one right after Gram Parsons with Clarence White and Gene Parsons.

Earl Scruggs Revue - Live at Kansas State

Here's a long out of print album from the aforementioned Earl Scruggs Revue. Released in 1972, this gives a good glimpse of what Earl Scruggs was into at the time.....not your typical bluegrass. After splitting with Lester Flatt in the late 60's, he formed a new band with his sons. With a loose atmosphere, amplification, and a slew of songs from the likes of Dylan and Baez. This is a good album....a fun album. You can tell Scruggs was having a blast playing music with his family.

If anybody has the album that came out shortly before this called "Family & Friends" (also out of print) please share, I've been looking and looking for a digital copy of it.

This is what it's all about folks...

The Byrds & The Earl Scruggs Revue playing Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere". If this clip doesn't define country-rock, then I don't know what does. I mean the mighty Clarence White on B-Bender plus the immortal Earl Scruggs on 5-string.....!!!!! Amazing!!!!.
If you've never heard of The Earl Scruggs Revue, it was Scruggs' band with his sons in the early 70's. They were (gasp..) a "bunch of longhairs". They made a few great albums back then, most notably Anniversary Vol.1 & Vol. 2 which featured a plethora of guests similar to Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's masterpiece of an album (that may be an understatement) "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Only here's the twist, instead of a bunch of hippies enlisting bluegrass legends, they were bluegrass legends enlisting hippies. People like McGuin, Loudon Wainwright III, Charlie Daniels, Johnny Cash, Buffy Saint-Marie, & legendary producer Bob Johnston. A highly reccomended album if you enjoy this clip.

Terry Allen - Live at Threadgill's Austin, TX 9-7-07

Here's a rare treat for your hearin' ears, a Terry Allen boot. If you're not familiar with Terry Allen this is a great place to start. The Sound quality is excellent, and the set list is too. Includes one of my favorite songs which he co-wrote with Guy Clark (yeh, that's the caliber of performer we're talkin' about here)....."Queenie's Song". Terry Allen is probably more well known (in certain circles) for his artwork, which you can check out here: http://www.terryallen.com/ I think Terry himself says he is "a painter who just happens to write songs on the side".....something like that.
So if you dig guys like Blaze, Guy, McMurtry, Townes, or Steve Earle's folk side....you'de probably dig this as well.

Lucero - Live at WESN (11-22-02)

Heres a cool acoustic Lucero show from 2002. Recorded in a radio studio so you know the sound quality is good. It's a pretty interesting boot just because it's so similar to "The Attic Tapes", except there are newer songs on this one. Anyway, if you liked "The Attic Tapes" you will most likely dig this.

The Sadies - Schubas Tavern Chicago, IL Dec. 2001

Here's a cool little Sadies show from way back in '01. Pretty killer set here, and The Sadies aren't known for their live shows for nothin' boys. If you're not familiar with The Sadies, they are killer instrumentalists who play their own mix of surfabilly-bluegrass-country-delic-gospelpunk.....check em out. This is a good place to start. They have an official live album that, while a killer album, is much like a modern rap record(:-P).....you know, plagued with just a touch too many guest appearences (cough cough..jon spencer..cough).
I didn't get much information with this one, so all I know is that it was recorded at Schubas Tavern in December of 2001. I have another Sadies boot I will be putting up that features some steel guitar and is equally killer, so look forward to that if you are a fan.

Steve Earle - Live in London 5-13-96

OK, so I'm back online....so without further delay, here is a damned good Steve Earle boot. Sounds like this was some kind of radio show, not really sure. All you need to know is the sound is excellent and he was touring in support of his then just released masterpiece "I Feel Alright".....need I say more.
