Truesounds Aug. '07

Allright folks, this will most likely be my final post for a few weeks at least. The last "Truesounds" comp. was a success, so I decided to make it a monthly thing. I usually burn (almost) monthly mixes for myself anyway, so it works out pretty good.

01-Hayes Carll-Beyond The Blues (this is off this year's Peter Case Tribute album, which has a shit-ton of awesome people on it like Todd Snider, Buckner, Joe Ely, McMurtry, Prine....etc . I'm a big Hayes fan so I love anything new I can get from him)
02-Scott H. Biram-Lost Case Of Being Found (the sensational one-man-band himself, this is off his album from last year "Graveyard Shift")
03-David Childers and The Modern Don Juans-Little Summertime Girl (these guys are a recent discovery for me, and I'm really diggin' them. This song is off their new album "Burning In Hell"
04-Wrinkle Neck Mules-Cadillac Limousine (another recent discovery, this song is off of this year's "Wicks Have Met")
05-Johnny Cash-God's Gonna Cut You Down (it's Johnny Cash.....what more do I need to say. Off of last year's posthumously released "American V")
06-King Wilkie-Wrecking Ball (yet another recend discovery....a great little bluegrass band. This is off their most recent, 2007's "Low Country Suite")
07-Ollabelle-High On A Mountain (soul-country-gospel.....this band features Levon Helms daughter. Off last year's "Riverside Battle Songs")
08-The Sadies-Anna Leigh (I love the surf-twang of the Sadies, this one is off this year's "New Seasons")
09-Blanche-So Long Cruel World (I was turned onto this band by one of you guys in the comments.....I don't remember who, but you know who you are, thanks. Off 2004's "If We Can't Trust The Doctors")
10-Blaze Foley and The Beaver Valley Boys-Cold, Cold World (I love Blaze Foley, this one is off of last year's release from the vaults "Cold, Cold World")
11-Dwight Yoakam-I Don't Care (Just As Long As You Love Me) (this is off Dwight's forthcoming Buck Owens tribute album)
12-Son Volt-Highways and Cigarettes (off of their newest, 2007's "The Search")
13-Bobby Bare Jr's Young Criminal-Where Is My Mind (Bobby Bare's son doing what is arguably the pixies most famous song....his is a very subdued take on it...but interesting. Off of last year's "The Longest Meow")
14-The Gourds-Promenade (man I love this one, been in my head for days.....off their just released "Noble Creatures")
15-The Corb Lund Band-The Truth Comes Out (Canadian country-rockers Corb Lund & co.'s song about climate change :).....not exactly.....but a good song. Off his 05 album "Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer")
16-Porter Wagoner-Eleven Cent Cotton (Porter Wagoner is back this year with an excellent album called Wagonmaster.....if you crave vintage country sounds.....get it)
17-Frank Carlier-White Trash (West Virginia local sings about life in west virginia...this song is very "Bottle Rockets-ish". Off of last year's "Americana 101".....this song rocks BTW)
18-Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles-Lonely Town of Love (newcomer Sarah Borges (pronounced Bor-Gess.....that's right, she's portuguese) comes on strong with this one off her 07 album "Diamonds In The Dark". This one reminds me of a twanged up Letters To Cleo song)
19-Two Cow Garage-No Shame (off their newest album "Three", crunchy alt-country in the vein of Lucero & Slobberbone)
20-Red Star Belgrade-Song For Ed (I love the first line in this one: "the alcoholics are calling you an alcoholic". This is a very Neil Youngish rocker. Off 2004's "The Real Traitors")
21-Lucero-Noon as Dark as Midnight (Just a good song to finish it up with, off 2005's "Nobody's Darlings)

The Fabulous Johnny Cash Show - Houston, TX 3-14-61

Talk about a rare treat, this one's for you old time country fans. This is a fantastic recording of a Johnny Cash Show concert in it's entirety from 1961. Featuring George Jones, and Roger Miller before they became household names, and also features old time country songbird Rose Maddox. The sound of this is incredible considering it's a bootleg from 1961. Sure there are some hiccups here and there, but overall it's great. John R. was in fine form this night too, as his set is just how you would imagine a 1961 Johnny Cash concert to sound. This is a must download for any country music fan.

Todd Snider & Nancy Griffith - In Touch With The Devil You Know

Here's an interesting recording, Todd Snider being interviewed by Nancy Griffith about his 2006 masterpiece "Devil You Know". The real highlights here though are the duets they do together....man, I wish they would collaborate together on an album sometime.....really sweet harmonies coming from these two. Just listen to their take on "You Got Away With It" & Griffith's "It's A Hard Life".....superb.

Neko Case - Grand Prairie, TX 8-10-07

Here's a nice little show from alt country's favorite songbird Neko Case. It's a pretty good set too, though it's a little short. Not as rollicking as the official live album with the Sadies (Tiger's Have Spoken) but a rare treat none-the-less, and it's good to hear some songs from her excellent "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood" album in a live format.

01 Things That Scare Me

Buddy & Julie Miller - Portland, Oregon 8-31-02

Here's a really, really good show from husband and wife team Buddy & Julie Miller. The notes that came with this say this is actually a show that Buddy gave to a fan, that's pretty cool if you ask me. Also in the notes it says that this disc is in memory of Anna Aviles who died of cancer, and was the fan that Buddy gave this show to.
Give it a listen, it's really good. If you don't know who Buddy or Julie Miller is, well Buddy is probably more famous as a producer and Julie is his wife......they are both damned good singers & songwriters too. They put out a damned good album together in 2001 that is essential, along with various solo albums each. (You can find some of their solo studio work on the 1990 - 2000 samplers below :P)

Todd Snider - Ohio River Valley Folk Festival 5-19-07

You want more Todd, you've got it. This is one you can listen to with the kiddies, probably the cleanest Todd Snider show I've ever heard. He cleans up all the songs and even comments on it during a couple of songs ("if worms had daggers, birds wouldn't....act so overly aggresive towards them"). Makes for an interesting listen, and doesn't really take that much away from the songs. I actually respect that he cleaned his show up due to the large portion of children in the audience.....I think that shows alot of class. There are some pretty good stories on here too, and the sound is fantastic.

Jason Isbell - KEXP Studios Seattle 8-1-07

Here's a good little acoustic Jason Isbell set he did for KEXP radio in Seattle, WA. There are some insightful interviews on here (sorry, he doesn't spill any dirt on why he left DBT). Some good versions of songs off his new album as well. The highlight on here, just like on the album is of course Dress Blues. This song is so good it's not even funny, and will surely be remembered as one of the best "protest songs" from this era when people start looking back.

A Truer Sampler 12: Alt Country 1990 - 2000 Vol. 4

The final volume, I could have probably done more, but I had to stop somewhere. This one has more of a concentration of folks who started in the 90's, but are more known for their post 90's work.....if that makes sense.
Anyway, I had a blast compiling this and making the artwork, hope you guys enjoy

A Truer Sampler 11: Alt Country 1990 - 2000 Vol. 3

Volume 3. Just fleshing this thing out, so much good music came out of this era it was impossible to compress into 1 (or even 2) discs.

A Truer Sampler 10: Alt Country 1990 - 2000 Vol. 2

Ok, here's volume 2. This one has more of an emphasis on mid 90's, and includes some deeper cuts and lesser known artists (some even more well known as well).

To clear some things up, I won't be going away for about a week, which is why I'm trying to overload you with crap right now.....mainly this "Alt Country 1990 - 2000" sampler.

there's still 2 more volumes, so stay tuned.

A Truer Sampler 09: Alt Country 1990 - 2000 Vol. 1

Well now, this was an ambitious project. I originally intended it to be a single disc type thing, but the more I got into it the more songs I had to include.....I finally stopped at 4 volumes. This is Volume 1. The other volumes will follow in the next few days. On this one I tried to mainly include the heavy hitters of Alt Country (whatever that means), and I typically gave precedence to songs that received radio airplay. I did however (throughout the whole series) only include one song from an album.....in case your wondering why "Windfall" is not on there (yeh, yeh....).

Anyway, I wanted to hurry and get this series up....cause I'll be moving in a few weeks and will be without internet for a couple of months. What that means to you guys is no updates for 2 months!! So I'm trying to overload you with stuff before I take my hiatus. I had alot of fun making this, and it is by no means comprehensive.....it's just songs from my CD collection, and it had to be songs I at least on some level like (in case you were wondering why no 16 Horsepower on here....sorry, but I just don't like them very much)

Enjoy it guys....more to follow.

Buick MacKane (AKA: Alejandro Escovedo) - Cat's Cradle, Carrboro, NC 10-16-97

I've always been a fan of Alejandro's more rockin' stuff.....which is typically live. Well in the mid 90's, he formed a side band specifically to "rock out" so to speak...that band was called Buick MacKane (and you will find no strings here). Named after a T-Rex song, they deliver. Alejandro squeezes every perfect not out of his guitar and reworks some of his famous solo songs. This is a damned good boot, and if you're not very familiar with Alejandro Escovedo, download this....It's a killer show....twangy, loud, country-rock. This was recorded at the Cat's Cradle outside Chapel Hill, NC and they were opening for Son Volt (wouldn't that have been a killer show). His little brother sings a few songs towards the end, and then Chip Robinson & Brad Rice of the Backsliders join them on stage for a rollicking rendition of Powderfinger.

Scud Mountain Boys - Cat's Cradle - Chapel Hill, NC 3-11-97

I know Sunday's over now, but this was a perfect Sunday listen so I just had to put it up. Actually Scud Mountain Boys are a perfect "sunday band" if that makes any sense. The perfect music to listen to with a hangover and regrets. If you're not familiar with them, they were a shortlived band from Massachusets who put out some killer mellow alt-country albums in the mid to late 90's. Band leader Joe Pernice has went on apparantly to become more famous as a solo artist or as "The Pernice Brothers", I'm not quite sure 'cause I haven't followed his career, but I do enjoy some Scud Mountain Boys when the mood strikes me. Anyway, give this a listen...it's mellow, good sound quality (though the levels jump around a bit) and my only complaint is that they didn't do "Grudge", which is probably my favorite song of theirs.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - Live in Philadelphia 7-14-07

All I can say about this one is WOW!!! Jason learned a thing or two during his stint with the truckers, number being how to put on a live show. If you like live truckers, download this.....it's as good as anything they have done. Some seriously good guitar playing going on too....Jason was always a killer guitarist with the truckers, but he takes to a whole 'nother level here.....I mean WOW!!! What's even cooler is he plays some of his famous songs he recorded with the truckers.....and expands on them.....adding some of that killer guitar he is soon to be known for. I'm really loving this recording, alot better than the album (which is out NOW btw.....go get it......and go check him out live)
