From The Archives: A Truer Christmas

From The Archives - This is from exactly 1 year ago today, and what's amazing to me is that the sharebee link is still good! This is not the only one I've come across that is still good either, so cheers to sharebee, and Merry Christmas to everyone out there in blog land

----------------------------

I believe Vaughn planted the bug for this one back during the Truer Halloween post. Let me just say this, this was no easy task my friend. I found out 2 important things will compiling this: 1. There are a shit ton of christmas albums, 2. Most of them suck (as a matter of fact the cover I made reflects what I felt like doing after about the 14th listen to some crappy over produced rendition of "insert christmas song here". But I think I came up with something workable. I tried to seperate them a little so the sadder songs (christmas tearjerkers my friends) are towards the back, but some of them (like the Dwight Yoakam "santa can't stay") I couldn't decide whether they were tragic or funny. You will also come to realize I have a special love for surf music in my heart (I had to try hard to keep from puttin a ventures song on here, and the next to final draft DID INDEED have a ventures song on it). A couple of the songs were mandatory (like the "Merry Christmas From The Family" & "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy") but I tried to veer away from the traditional stuff. One thing on here that bugs me though is the censorship of the otherwise excellent "Oklahoma Christmas". I couldn't for the life of me find an uncensored version, doubt their even is one. I kept the song on the mix though cause hell it's still a funny song and since it's censored, you can play this mix in front of the little ones without getting on Santa's bad list....too much.

Someone we all know and love over at Fifty Cent Lighter left this hilarious comment: "to clarify, they are up against Douchebags, Teeth & Hat, Skirt & Hat, and Skirt & Douchebags".
I think showing a little more of that attitude on this blog would serve it well. HA!
Really, people need to wake the Fu#k up and put an end to the nonsense that that crap is in ANY WAY Country Music. Good luck to The Steeldrivers, they're awesome!

haha, glad you caught that Vaughn! Teeth & Hat is what I've been referring to all the "duo" country groups for years. Think about it...the formula always is one guy in a cowboy hat, and a pretty boy who smiles all the time.

Grievous Angel, I will get that back up, I'm still going through the archives and upping everthing as torrents, but I will pull that one out as a from the archives post here soon. I also have a Guy Clark, Steve Earle, & Verlon Thompson songwriters workshop I will be putting up sometime soon.

TS - Thanks for this. Didn't get it last year. Glad to get it this year on a tip from Aimz' blog. And Vaughn - I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of The Steeldrivers...that is until last night. They played 3 tunes in Nashville last night at a benefit show for a local homeless ministry. Incredible. Not sure the lead singer/guitarist's name - the dude looks like Mikey from American Chopper - but he & the rest of them were amazing. Can't remember name of 1st 2 songs - but last one was Blue Side of the Mountain.

TOO MUCH: Buy The Steeldrivers self-titled CD on Rounder and when you see them again live pick up their self-released live CD recorded at The Station Inn. It repeats many of the songs from the studio CD but it's still worth having for the performances.
TRUER: That formula is SO right on. My girlfriend and I watch GAC and CMT just to make fun of the fools in those videos (that is until I can't stand hearing the music. Our favorite is the old stand-by BROOKS AND DUNN in which Kix Brooks pretends to do play guitar and pretends to sing back-up but all he really does is make money at wearing a hat. It must drive Ronnie Dunn insane.
